On the VRT question, If you ring the VRT place with the chassis number they will give you an exact amount, that's what I did anyway. If you give make and model they will give you an amount but until they enter the exact chassis number into their system they won't be able to give you the exact amount.

So really you need to find a car and get it's chassis number before you can get a proper quote - I wonder how UK garages would react to being asked for the chassis number of the car before you buy it - I suppose there shouldn't be any real issue though?

No. No. I'm sure what gtoirl is saying is that you need the chassis no. type i.e. the first few digits -not the complete chassis no. Say for a 2L FTO it would be DE3A, thats all you need to specify the car. Have you rang the VRO?

I'm thinking if they had the full chassis number they might be able to tell what year the car was and thus give a definate quote. When I got my VRO inspection thing it was just the chassis number he was interested in and checked the full number against the car.

Cheers for clarifying mustang. I haven't rang the VRO mainly because it's still very early days - I'm still examining my options so a rough VRT figure is enough for now

Kev IMO, in this instance the reson for checking the chassis number is to verify that the car you are trying to register matchs the paperwork you have. I do not believe it has anything to do with assesing the value of the car. This is done by taking the model type and or chassis type, registration year, mileage and overall condition -although I don't think this last one has much (any) impact on price once the vehicle is listed on their database.

Yes of course, but the figure is not arrived at based on the chassis number. Just the chassis type, and the other factors listed above.

That does make for some interesting reading - it might make some sense wrt the S3 as I don't believe many people will be willing pay what's being asked for them over here.... after all it's still a hatchback. I like them but I have to admit I too am having difficulty justifying the prices.... once again it just serves to highlight what a good performance bargin the FTO really is!!
