Great to find a forum that specializes in my favourite posession

My P & J is a 97 pre facelift GR.

My question relates to tyre size. I went to fit a set of 18*8 alloys tonite and under the advise of the tyre shop i went for 225/40.

But the problem is when I turn the steering to the right it rubs off the suspension ,not even at full lock Turning to the left seems ok.

Is this profile too big for the front tyres of the FTO ? (my car is not lowered by the way)

I dont want to run a 225/35 as these are just to harsh on the road.

Anybody have any advise or experience with 225/40/18 fitting without problems

Welcome aboard. 18's are a fairly large wheel for the FTO, but there are a few people on here running with them. Dave (1.8 GS), Danny Kierans (2l GR). Sorry I can't help but there are a few tyre 'experts' on here who can offer some advice.

i have 225/40's on mine now, but in saying that, mine is lowered and i;ve fitted a set of KYB shocks, which are a shorter shock than standard so i'm experiencing rubbing on full lock, but it shouldn't rub off the suspension, it should only rub on the wheel arch lining!

There are a lot of people running this size wheel/tyre combo in the UK - the only problem I can see is that the wheel offset is too big and as a result the wheels are sitting too far in - whip off the wheels and check the offset (in inside of the rim) - AFAIK the recommeded offset is ET38. MfFTO is running ET35 on 8" rims so that his wheels stick out a bit more than normal - I'd guess you'll need a wheel with ET35....

As per Dave & Shane -

If its rubbing on the wheel arch liner no problem really - you could try riveting (or tie-binding) the arch as high as possible.

If its rubbing off the bottom of the dampers then its likely to be the wheel offset - with your size wheel it likely needs to be at least a 35 offset.

So for example if you are running a 42 offset you will need to get your hands on some 7mm spacers.

This is a fairly common problem that people experience when they buy the wrong offset. Tyre is closer to damper on a higher offset. I see what you are saying though AL - its more likely that its just rubbing off arches etc if he is able to drive on it at all.

Would be easier to make a comment if we knew what offset is been run.

But the problem turned out to be something a lot simpler. The wheel was rubbing off the front right mud guard which had a couple of bolts protruding from it

It was poorly lit when I fitted them last nite and and I only noticed this in the cold light of day this morning............. altho they are only millimetres away from the dampers(barely get a paper through there) I think this should pose no problem.


All IN ALL they are a massive improvement over the standard 16" which leave massive gaps in the arches that begged to be filled.

with your size wheel it likely needs to be at least a 35 offset.

I checked this and they are an offsett of 40

So for example if you are running a 42 offset you will need to get your hands on some 7mm spacers.

I'm not a big fan of spacers - if the car feels ok I'd leave it as is. I'm surprised they fit though TBH - it must be really tight.

You are running an incorrect offset for the size of your wheel though - the wheel would have looked,sat and handled better with a 35 offset.

I'm up there myself, we might even be next door neighbours, I'm in building 5100, I think you're in 5200? I think there was a silver one in Hibernian for a short while but I haven't seen it in a long time.

Haha thats my old car !!!!, i had a silver "95 prior to this one.Everyone at work kept telling me that they saw someone else driving my car now i've found the culprit.

You haven't seen it in quite some time by the sounds of it! Yup it did have all kinds of stickers and muck all over the back of it when it came from Japan, which was all duly cleared off (now debadged and all). And the alloys were different back and front but I've std 16s all round now. 4 nice new Enkei Evo 8 alloys sitting in the garage at home, once we get to jan/feb I'll put tyres on them and stick them on.

I'm in ACS btw, used to be in Logica up on the top floor of 5100 before they closed down the Cork office.

I just have the mystery of a silver celica (4 round lights version) beeping at me & waving up in Spar twice now, must work out who that was!
