Brake Disks Opinions

Postby steelroe » Sun Mar 29, 2009 11:32 pm

What are peoples opinons on diff types/manuafacturers of aftermarket Disks.
(This is not FTO specific).
Or specifically what disks would you prefer to have on a big brake conversion?

I was wondering this myself.

I was reading up on different types of disc, it seems drilled ones can crack.
With that in mind I had a look for dimpled ones and the only ones I can find are the EBC grooved & dimpled.
Not sure how good or bad they are though.

Problem with big brakes and dimpled/grooved disks is sqeal and judder. Similar to the noise you hear from rally cars under hard breaking.

I reckon a bigger caliper with normal disks are more than enough for a standard engined FTO, for tubo etc the grooves and dimples are a vast improvement.

With drilled and grooved you seem to get that shaky feeling when braking hard all right as you said Rory, the other thing is that they wear the pads a lot quicker than flat discs so the pads need replacing more often.

I would never get drilled disks, iv seen 2 cases of disks cracking and it originated from these,
Groved disks and maybe dimpled but I always go for groved disks.

3G do a lovely disk and with say forrodo pads they have a lovey bite

I have grooved discs and ferodo pads at the moment.
No problems yet with either squeal or judder, maybe it's just drilled/dimpled ones that cause this?
