Is it the tappets????

Postby StewyD32 » Thu Feb 11, 2010 10:59 pm

hey guys i've been reading about tappets problems on here as i think i have the same problem, but on the previous tappet problems here they say the nose doesn't go away, but my tapping noise goes away after 2 minutes.

It only happens when i start the car in the morning, and some times the battery is low but then turn back to normal voltage after 15 minutes. (the battery is new and i don't think anything is draining it).

Does anyone know if it is the tappets seems the noise goes away after only 2 minutes?????
(when i bought the car i knew it was layed up for a while, and serviced it and they said it was perfect, but they wouldn't have heard the noise)

a common problem in a non mivec engine is the tappets . have a search on the forum and you can read more how to take care of it.
there's a treatment you can by in the local motorfactors for about a tenner which helps them quiet down and a regular change of oil is also recommended .

Only over a long period of time I think. Why don't you just clean them yourself? Have a look on You Tube. You'll see how to do it there. The weather is getting better now so it wouldn't be that unpleasant to do. There's nice satisfaction in doing these jobs for yourself.

If you do decide to take it on yourself, take pictures, notes and label things along the way.

So Stewy have you done it yourself?
I've exactly the same problem, in the morning I can hear that rattling sound from the engine and it goes away after few minutes or after driving a while.
Would newbie like me that never opened an engine before would be able to do it ?
I've seen that thread how to clean them but it was kinda scary. :)

I was going to until i was talking to 3 garages like quickfit etc to see what they thought and if they would do it on the cheap for me..................... They woun't touch it with a barge pole coz if the tappets are off a little they'll get f*!ked and you'll be in alot worse situation.
As for me doing it.... :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 ... not a chance anymore if they would touch it even with me supplying them with the tappets.

You do it and tell me how it goes

hi mate dont be put off by what they've said it sounds to me they just want to fit tyres and dics and pads that you did'nt even need rather than do real garage work, i picked my second fto gr up on wednesday and in the ad they said nothing about the noisey ar$e tappets it was terable the noise never went away ever thats how bad it was so i got him to knock off £350 and i happily took it, as soon as i got home i rang camskills ordered a full set £270 (http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m3b0s9p2474) also got a cambelt kit with tensioners and water pump as there was no history no water leaks but for an extra 35 quid seeing as the c/belt is off i might as well change at same time anyway getting off subject, parts turned up friday so friday night i went back into work at 8pm (i have great bosses and a set of keys to the workshop) and started the job and its easy only took 2 hours whip the inlet off, cover the inlet ports so to not accidently drop anything in them then whip the cam covers off and again there are big oil ways at the lowest points in the head bung them up with rag for the same reason then follow this good guide (http://www.ftoaustralia.com/modules.php ... pic&t=7258) to removing the rockers to gain access to the tappets so you can eaither clean or my oppinion best off replace as it a guaranteed fix (alot of work to do only to find it dont last) then slot all back together and start up dont worry when you do restart it it will rattle ALOT and it takes ages to stop (tappets need to fill with oil) the best way to sort it quickly is to drive it up the road and about 2 miles down the road at highish rpm all will be quite and thats it. It sound complex but really its not i would offer a hand but your miles and miles away.
