Postby 99casst » Sat Jan 16, 2010 11:02 am

hello people some u may not agree with this but some u may no this. this will save u a good 30 -40 min in time when doing the alternator most u no u got take the alternator belt amd pulley bracket of well yes but when it comes to dropping it out u all take the drive shaft out but there is a bit of a easy slash u may say bodge but as long as your careful u can remove without taking drive shaft out when looking at from underneath u can snap a little bit of cam cover of witch will not affect the rest of cover and it will then slip out once fitted back glue the broken cover back to the other half it then becomes one again with no problems and alternator is a lot simple hope this helps

I'm finding it really difficult to read your post.

I think you're trying to let us know that when removing the alternator one can snap off a bit of the cam cover - rather than splitting the driveshaft.

Personally I wouldn't be a fan of using glue on the car..but hey..if it works for you :)

I'd have reservations about a potentially lose piece of plastic so close to the cambelt.

Would prob be safer to do it the way that you don't have to break sometime, I can see how doing that would save time but personally I like all the parts in the car to be undamaged and to be sure that if a mechanic or anyone else looks at the car that they see that its in perfect nick. If I saw something that looks like a quick fix on the underside of a car I'd get worried about it. But thats just me. :)

Is there any merit to this?

I need to get my alternator repaired but the biggest cost of this is the removal and refitting of the alternator.

If it is as easy as removing the cam cover then I could do it myself and save a packet!

If so, how would I go about doing it?

Thanks CJ but I meant the way that was described in the post above. He claims that removing the cam cover makes it easier to remove the alternator without having to remove the driveshaft etc.

Personally, I wouldn't be happy snapping the cam cover in an effort to ease alternator removal. Each to their own.

Nor me, but he says that if the cam cover is removed, alternator can be taken out much easier. I'm just wondering how you would go about removing the cam cover.

On a side note, there's an auto-electrician near me who will do the whole job for €40 an hour plus any parts. Question I have is are the parts of the FTO alternator freely available or are they unique to the FTO? Trying to establish the cost of a repair rather than a replacement.

EDIT: Quoted €180 for parts so getting a replacement from Rory. Still interested in finding out about getting the Cam cover off though

Done this job yesterday, removed all alternator bolts as normal.

Remove driverside engine mount nut and bolt, jack up engine as far as possible without straining anything.
The drive shaft doesnt have to be remove totally, remove trackrod end from hub, and two nuts and bolts from shock that connects with hub,
You can then manouvre driveshaft/hub as much as needed to remove alternator
