The RX-7 owners over at irishrotary.com seem to be getting some very reasonable quotes through http://www.123.ie of late. I believe they're now underwritten by RSA (my insurer, incidentally) following a move away from Travellers. I'd be interested to hear if they generate similar results for FTO owners, worth a call around renewal time.

RSA own 123 so they underwrite everything but they dont take the non standard stuff, someone else underwrites this!! It depends on whether or not they'd class an FTO as non standard but I'd imagine they do

To put it in context, guys with a generally similar profile to the members of this forum are getting RX-7s insured for €250 TPF&T with 123.ie. From experience, I can say that an RX-7 has a much higher real world risk factor when compared to an FTO on a number of different criteria.

Dave, do you have any insight into the actuarial side in things in terms of gaining an understanding of the risk profile associated with the FTO versus, say an RX-7? Both are Jap imports (implying expensive parts), coupes, 'sports cars' and likely to be driven by younger drivers- whats the flag that makes the screen light up bright red when we go a calling for a quote?

Its like when I was looking into the Z insurance a few years ago, could get it much cheaper than the FTO as well. Its ridiculous to be honest.

No cj I haven't info on the actuarial side of things, it's a strange one to call, I still put it down to lack of information on the actuaries part in relation to the risk of an FTO versus pretty much anything else....

Would it just come down to risk of theft perhaps? I know that wouldn't add up fully, considering the cost to insure, versus the cost to buy another one, but it must be a tipping factor for the unreasonably high rates requested.

To add insult to injury, many Irish owners are getting the engines reclassified as 1308cc (totally legal and correct), down from 1700cc i.e. cheap tax and even cheaper insurance. Some insurers offer classic insurance on cars that are over 20 years old, I wonder how the FTO will far out in 2014 - 2015?

Well my brother has a 94 GR, so he may be one of the first to be able to test it out.......if he ever gets his feckin license.

I think they are working off UK stats. FTOs are cheap to buy in the UK as a 17 year old, which are probably subsequently crashed.

Insurance companies make no sense what so ever. Supposably 90ish bhp 1995 toyota corolla was 1600euro tpft two months later i get a quote of 1100 for a 1996 310ish bhp mitsi legnum!!!
Makes no sense to me at all!!

What are the terms to classic insurance? AFAIK it only cover you for "weekend" driving. As in if you were in a crash on the M50 at 9am on a wednesday morning the insurance company could claim you were using the car for commuting, not leisure and subsequently refuse to pay out? Thats my understanding of it but it could of being that crafty goat that keeps appearing in my dreams and telling me dodgy stuff for a larf.

There are restrictions, no doubt, but I think it's more the amount of mileage you do rather than the time of day you're driving, worth investigating though....

I've been with 123.ie for a number of years.

2 years ago renewal on the 166 was €565 2.0 TS.
Changed over to a Spider, same engine.
Expected the premium to go up, due to it being a ragtop an'all

Last Octobers renewal.... €363..!?!??

Got my renewal off 123 and its gone from €348 to €470 this year. Think thats a bit much so needless to say I wont be renewing. What are people finding in terms of their policy going up or down. I'm 32 with 11 years ncb and have a tip gpx.
In the last two years my insurance has gone up over 50%. Is anybody seeing similar increases?

Ring them and get them to lower it. Tell them you expect it to be cheaper since the new equality legislation came into effect
