NCT on 2nd of July

Postby Mickthepieman » Wed May 28, 2008 10:20 am

Got my date for my NCT today 2nd of July.

Is there anything out of the ordinary on the FTO I should get checked out before my NCT date.

a standard pre-nct check should do it Mick.

Oil, Filters, Brakes, Lights.. you should be alright.

Make sure you rev the bejaysus out of her on the way to the NCT center to burn off and crud in the system - this should help you with the emissions.

Oh - do make sure you have a cat installed.

I always try to get my lights focused coming up to an NCT, but there's not a lot specifically would need to be done.

I thought with the FTO the light's don't come into it? They can't be focused or something because the so low down? I dono something the NCT man said to me? :?:

Tough luck on not passing the NCT mine failed on the same last year, could be just a small hole in you exhaust, cheap and cheerfull weld, just to pull you through the NCT.

Whats the pass/failure figure for those Mick? As Marie said, it could be a hole in the exhaust, or maybe one of the sensors on the exhaust is knackered.

They can of course be focused (and tested), if you look at the lense there's 2 dots, one for each beam for focusing purposes. How low the car is doesn't come into it, if you were on the ground shining your light straight into the oncoming driver's faces its a problem.

Don't suppose yours was failing on the lights but there was some eyelid battering going on? :P

Yeah - those numbers are high - high idle is 3 times higher than it should be. Probably the CAT or a hole in your exhaust.

If they were higher still then it would be the O2 Lambda sensor.

I presume you caned the car hard before the NCT ? What was the engine temp at the time of the test - this is written on the report they gave you. It should be about 90 degrees to operate really optimally.

Get under there and check your exhaust for holes first.

Not sure of the price of a new cat, a few hundred I would imagine. Maybe go second hand with Steelroe for a cheaper deal.

Also, you should clean off the O2 Lambda sensor - mine was caked in black stuff when I removed it. I'm sure it actually would have been fine if I had just cleaned it off instead of replacing.

Alternatively - borrow someone elses cat for the retest if you have nice fto buds.
