Cambelt/ Timing belt replacement

Postby cheekymunkeydude » Fri Oct 08, 2010 7:18 am

Hello....
The cambelt change is nearly due on my FTO and after buying all the parts (cambelt, auxillary belts, idler bearing, tensioner, water pump and even a new set of half moon cam seals) I've pretty much found myself skint!!! Anyway, I've decided to try and change it all myself - it doesn't look THAT hard, just fiddly and time consuming!!
having not changed a cambelt before, would anyone happen to have a diy guide to replacing an FTO cambelt at all (preferably with some pics for reference). I've already searched the site here - which has some pretty useful info, but the guide that is on here is kind of brief!
Any suggestions/info would be greatly appreciated as I wouldn't mind getting it done one weekend before the cold dark nights properly set in over winter!
Many thanks in advance

Thanks for getting back, but that was the rough walk through I'd found already!
If you could send me the info though, it would be much appreciated!
Cheers!

Just got hold of the FTO manual and looking at the info on the cambelt change and it says:

TIMING BELT INSTALLATION
(1) Turn the crankshaft sprocket so that its timing mark will
be away from the mating timing mark by approx. three
teeth. IS THIS DONE WITH THE CAMBELT STILL ON - BECAUSE WON'T THAT THEN MEAN THAT THE CAMSHAFT SPROCKETS ARE ALL SLIGHTLY OUT OF LINE WITH THE TIMING MARKS ON THE ENGINE BLOCK? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I want to make sure I'm totally clear on how to do this before I make a start, as don't want to be having to refer back to the laptop whilst i'm elbow deep in the engine bay!
Caution
If the timing marks are aligned, the piston is brought
to the TOC. When the camshaft is turned under this
condition, the valves may interfere with the piston.
(2) Bring the timing marks of the camshaft sprockets as shown
in the illustration. WONT THIS THEN MOVE THE CRANKSHAFT SPROCKET, MAKING THE STEP ABOVE KINDA POINTLESS?!
Caution
If one of the camshaft sprockets on the right bank
is turned with the timing mark on the other sprocket
aligned, there may be danger for the intake and
exhaust valves to interfere with each other.
(3) Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket with
the mating timing mark, and then turn the crankshaft
counterclockwise by one tooth.

Thanks again for the help!
