I'm on the lookout at the moment for a good quality detector - will need to be able to pick up radar (from old style hand helds and the rising number of cameras) and also be able to detect and jam laser speed detectors.

There seems to be a model for sale in the north at the moment (bell I think) that installs under your bonnet - with small controls that can be hidden in the cockpit. It has all the above functions and claims to be suitable for Rep of Ireland.

Think its about €500 or thereabouts - a small price to pay for keeping your licence. The only place I see guards doing speed checks these days is on the dual carriageway or wide long stretches of road like the Nenagh Bypass (beware the red mondeo v6) - easy money/soft targets - I am not a lunatic but I don't like being stopped doing 75 on a wide clear stretch of road with no other car in sight.

There was something in the news the other day about them diverting cops from watching motorways where the least amount of accidents happen to smaller more rural roads. Big redeployment thing happening. You'd know there was an election in the not too distant future!!

Did anyone who was in the RDS over the weekend see the detector that was supposed to be in there? I didn't hear about it until after... they were on about it on TodayFM on thursday supposedly, it was supposed to have been advertised as a garage door opener, and the suppliers claimed they didn't know it could be used as a radar detector...

Yeah we were talking to the lad, Its reasonably expensive at €539 and only Jams/ Detects laser, Not radar

Its quite an interesting Idea that you cant be prosecuted for it but I wouldnt be so sure about it, This is Ireland and the law enforcers can inerpret the law in different ways. Perverting the course of justice is a serious offence.

Its not against the law to buy/sell or own a 12' knife, But it is illigal to carry it around in your jacket/stab someone
Same goes for the laser "garage opener" The cops could argue that you certainly wernt opening your garage door while doing 70mph on the M50

this thing was on fifth gear, one of those programs on home and leisure (hangover tv  ) they showed it worked and all the rest, but they talked to the police about it and if a copper found it on your car, basically you'd have to prove that you used the device to open and close your garage...... if you do then it's not your fault, but if you haven't even got a garage, you could be done for it!

You can get them a lot cheaper in the states. Dont know the ins and outs of it, but I got one off my dad and someone told me that it doesn't detect one of the bands that they work on in Ireland. Not all the US ones are like this but you need to do the research before you buy one.

Here are some links. The first two have write-ups and decent descriptions of the various functions, etc.

I have seen it advertised in mags such as AutoTrader / CBG - from memory I think its the Bel Europa with the Rader and Laser detection/diffuser as per Mustangs links above - however I seem to recall it being cheaper than the €700 euros advertised on speedcameradefence.
