gearbox trouble

Postby gt94 » Wed Jan 23, 2008 7:18 pm

Was driving home today from work and went to change down and no 2nd at all. Got to my house parked up checked it again and there is no 4th no 2nd and no reverse it just wont sit into those gears.Searched the site found that viper had the same problem. http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2 ... .php?t=285

Q1 Does anyone know the price to fix this.
Q2 Is it a big job
Q3 Are the parts i need ready available

Any help or info welcome

sounds like a linkage has broken or is detached. This went on the car I was driving over christmas, and a couple of cable ties later, she was good to go.

It kept me going till the garage opened after Christmas.

Pretty simple job on an Avensis. dunno what access to the manual box on the FTO is like though. Think the FTO uses solid linkages as opposed to cables.

Solid linkages on FTO manual. first and easiest is probably to remove the gear lever surround, and check the linkages at that end. they have become diconnected from the lever, or they may have come loose from their mounting, either way it should be fairly obvious. failing that they have come loose at the gear box end. open the bonnet get someone to stir the gearlever while you locate the linkages.......might need to remove battery to get access (not sure).

^^ what Mustang said, sounds like a linkage problem under the gear shift or at the gearbox.

Funnily enough, I experienced the exact same problem last night in the Colt - could only get 1st and 5th (at a struggle), no 'rear pattern' gears where selectable. I'll be having a good look this evening, the first thing I'll be checking is the linkages / selectors. Heres praying that synchomesh is not at fault.

Hmm, sounds like it could be synchromesh. Did you have someone move the gearstick about when you where looking at the linkages?

In my case, a bracket holding the linkage to the gearbox had snapped off - common Colt problem apperently. I've a guy sorted out to weld it back in place over the weekend.

Its been awhile but i got the fto back today. The selector rod for 2,4,R was not sitting properly so they were replaced and changed them and the bearings got a new clutch while they had it out and changed the gear fluid .Price tag was 1300 euro that included labour of 400 euros.6 months guarantee on parts. Do you think that was to much i thought excluding 400 for labour 900 for new clutch and parts wasn`t to bad(wouldnt like to pay it again though  )

Also i got my little box of goodies from ricerockett

Nice one - And it looks like you are going to be sorted on the suspension front. Can't see your pics of bushes very clear - looks like a set of the ARB bushes for front and rear! What did you order exactly? Whats the condition of your droplinks like? Now would be a good time to change.

Just checked the list got-- FTO - Front Bottom Arm - Front Bush KIT SUPERFLEX,FTO Front Bottom Arm - Rear Bush KIT STD CASTOR,FTO Rear Polyurethane Anti Roll Bar Bushes SUPERFLEX.Is that all the bushes i need didnt see anymore on the site.I changed the front droplinks about 2 months ago.Bought the rear droplinks for lowered suspension off camskill got them it the packaging waitng for fitment when the shocks are being done.I also still have to get new gators and bump stops for each shock.
Questions:
1.Thinking about doing this all by myself is it pretty straight forward?
2.I know i need a compression tool for the springs but do i need any other special tools for fitting i have all the basic sockets and stuff.
Thanks for any help ahead of time :D

Ah right - I got those bottom arm bushes before but with increased castor.
Have you changed the front ARB bushes yet then?

1: You can do it yourself but I wouldn't fancy it myself unless I had access to a ramp. Its a lot of pulling and dragging if you are considering doing this on axle stands.

2: The ARB and bottom arm bushes will be easy to get out - putting back in the Poly bushes may not be as easy.

If you are up for this yourself then fairplay - personally I'd be given my mechanic mate a hand bringing the tea.

Better to do it over a weekend and get it all done together while you are pulling off suspension parts.
