You can rebuild Yours or get second hand genuine one, cant give any review on new unit but i never had problems with either rebuilding one or fitting used one.

I can give you a review on the cheap eBay ones that are brand new. Don't buy them - I bought two and neither lasted more than 1 year.

Thanks guys

The old one has been to auto electrician and looks like its beyond repair.

From my experience the eBay ones must be a slightly lower rating as they never operated as well as the OEM and both of mine failed within a couple of years, while the OEM lasted almost 10 years.

Personally I would take. Used OEM unit and install that instead.

Which one did you get on eBay if you don't mind me asking

There are two types for sale. One is 10£ more expensive.Maybe it's better to chance it for the extra money

A used oem unit is the best option. If it does fail eventually, you are likely able to get it fixed. If you're in Dublin, I have spare parts I haven't advertised yet. Haven't started breaking it yet, but happy to start whenever. Pm me if you need any parts.

The cheapo ones on ebay for under €100 will only break your heart. The proper ones are multiples of that figure. A used oem unit will cost you less and last longer.

Took a quick check but couldn't see my old Seller on there. It was a UK based company and I paid about £90 STG if I recall correctly.

Basically one failed after 18 months - no comeback on that one. Another new one failed after about 9 months - I sent it back and got a refund. However these are heavy units and shipping them all over the place isn't that easy or cheap - you also have to pay a mechanic to be taking them in and out (unless you're a handy DIY car man yourself).

Agree with Goz - get a used OEM FTO one that is still working. It will probably still go for another few years before you can get refurbed for about the same price as those new ones on eBay. I got a one (bit old and rusty looking) from d_dan on here a few years ago and whacked it straight in - it's still working perfectly.

It could be tough to find a decent second hand alternator

What do ye reckon of the camskill one? It is reconditioned according to their site.
They look for the old one back though

Afraid I am in Cork,so it may not be cost effective to get it here

Is yours from a facelift model? Would it be same fitting as the prefacelift like mine.

The alternators are the same. I could send with parcel motel and it would cost about €5 to get it delivered to a parcel motel locker near you. PM me if interested.

I realise i made an assumption above i intend to check. But can anyone else confirm that an alternator from a facelift will be the same as a pre facelift? I have to admit i am not entirely sure, but there were very few changes with the facelift upgrades.

Nearly 100% certain it's the same. 4-pin unit. Camskill's site would be the place to confirm.

Lads, theres a few different alternators that were fitted to our cars, best to check what part number is on it and replace with the same, or upgraded version of the same unit.

Can you tell if both chassis numbers were given to you?

I had an alternator changed on my 94GR with one from a 97GX a couple of years ago and it was fine.

I can check no problem if i'll have two chassis numbers.

It mostly the case when you have older model alternator replacing the newer made unit. If using newer one on older car it should be fine.

That's a bit confusing. So newer alt fits older car, but not the other way around?

In short, it will work. But in long..........

I'll try to get you a picture that should explain most of it.

But basically, over fto production period the alternators been replaced with upgraded (stronger versions), so fitting newer unit to older car as long as its 4 pin and same pin placement it will work 100% good if not better.

If you put weaker (older) one to younger car as long as its 4 pin to 4 pin (same story as above) it will not work 100% good if the car came with stronger (more amps) unit from the factory.
