GPvR versus 4 door Civic Vti

Postby mcgon1979 » Fri Jun 29, 2007 7:03 am

Was coming in this morning at 615am and rounded that big intersection at the longmile/naas road. I was heading down Killeen road towards park west.
Anyway, if your not familiar with that road, its basically 2 lanes into one about 300metres from the intersection. Anyway I had just gone over the intersection when I hear this growling and see a Civic coming up the inside lane. I thought nothing of it, but then he pulled along side for a second and then floored it. I was at this stage sitting in second (having just pulled across the intersection) so almost instinctively went for it. Not usually the type.
He kept up well for 3 or 4 seconds but then the FTO left him behind. It was pretty even up until when the mivec kicked in, mind you, he had the jump on me at the start too. After I had left him I backed off and tipped away, there were red lights coming up anyways. He shot down the bus lane though as their is a taxi/buslane slip section that bypasses the traffic lights. tut tut. I used to do that myself until one day I saw a cop jeep after the slip section with 4 cars pulled in. At this stage I could hardly care anyways, he already had his tail between his legs.

Poor guy was in a saloon with a 1.6l engine... I wonder what he was thinking.. (pretty sure the VTI Hondas are 1.6 - correct me if I'm wrong pls)...

I used to drive a 1.5isl saloon - nice car, but not a racer that's for sure..

It's the first time someone has "tried it on" like that since I got the car. You need to know if its worth it though. Then again, lads driving RX7s or R33s etc don't go trying to slap FTO drivers. It's only ever lads in civics and wrx's etc. I guess the big boys get no glory out of caning a 200bhp car LOL.
Actually, I have noticed (and this might just be me personally guys) that the hyundai coupe owners seem to have some attitude towards FTOs. I think as far as I can tell anyone who drives a hyundai coupe knows nothing about cars and thinks they own a Ferrari because it has leather interior, sunroof and DUAL tailpipes... wahoo. not to mention that the 2 litre model produces 138bhp and the 2.7 V6 model a whopping 170bhp. yikes. Haven;t come up against a tegger type R (old 1.8 shape) yet but there are 1000s around so it seems inevitable. A fast car aswell so we'll see if it happens.
Oh yeah, while Im waffling, about 2 months ago I was at a roundabout on the N3. The first roundabout you come to after you drive OVER the M50 towards town. Its a small roundabout and 2 lanes basically have to converge into one if you drive around to the right (towards phoenix park).
So Im sitting there in the left lane on roundabout waiting for lights and this scooby comes up beside me in the right lane. I actually thought it was a harley at first it was so loud. LOL. he is revving it to bejaysis. not sure what exhaust he has, but sounds like a super dragger with a hole in it. Anyway I had the feeling he was gonna go for it at the green so I decided not too as the road ahead is too narrow and obviously this guy wouldn't be giving way. Lights go green he gives it all she has and it tips up the road like a fiesta. I then realise (from lack of rear diff) its a 1.6 boxer all done up on 17s with lowered suspension and WRX badges etc. All 90bhp of it. LOL. I was behind the guy at the next lights and just saw his baseball cap tilted back on the head, and his sun glasses (tear drop ray bans). LMAO. Legend. No doubt he was off to tell his mates how he destroyed an FTO on the way to work. Good times.

Don't worry, it's not just FTO's - as you say, they think because they're driving a 2 door coupe with some wannabe add-ons (dual exhaust, etc) it automatically makes their car fast.... and most are the 2.0 138bhp models. I had a 30-something idiot lady aggressively over take me on the inside lane on the M50 in the 60kmh section and force her way into a gap that really wasn't there just avoiding rear-ending a slower driver - traffic was already doing 80kmh in the fast lane and there was nowhere I could go but she did feel the need to beep her horn and give me the finger as she under-took. Suffice to say when the speed restriction ended I put swiftly put her back in her box..... 265bhp Vs 138bhp isn't much of a contest.

You're right about the huyndai peeps..I've gotten the evil eye a couple of times.. Suits, Sunglasses & Hyundai Coupe FX seems to be a popular combination these days..

Admittedly if they would just stick a proper engine in those things and sell them to a proper manufacturer I might actually be interested - I don't hate the new shape..

I've noticed that myself, these guys have nothing to prove and generally have better road sense and ettiquite than a lot of the Civic crew.

I had what looked liked a tricked out A4 (leave them alone lads, the look fine as they are!) try it on with me yesterday. I was in the Rex and admittedly took off from the lights with a heavy right foot. At the next set of lights, yer man started giving it the revs and while I usually don't rise to the occasion, I floored the Rex up to the speed limit (and thats the truth guard) and gave the lad a bit of a fright. That'll learn ya!

Don't know if it's just 350Z, but not many try it on, but any that do seem to be the larger exec cars, most recent was a guy in a BMW 530D, came off a roundabout, he was trying his best, i had to teach him not to bother...
a new golf GTI tried it on too... i don't often bother but i made another exception!!

I used have a 1.5 Vtec saloon to take out when I needed 4 or 5 seats and it always felt pretty fast if I wanted it to. But as soon as I got back into the mivec the difference was very obvious.
I would have kept it if it wasn't for those prats that now drive civics. Anyway I couldn't find a shop that sold those caps with the peak on the back.

The best stroy i have to tell about having a little safe head to head is the time i encountered a Porsche while i was in the Levin......

Now it was a boxter... notice i didnt say ONLY a boxter.... any Porsche deserves a lot of respect..... i was casually going straight through a roundabout on the N1... just as you get to Swords.... I was in the outside lane and yer typical middle management guy comes screeching round on my inside.... I was shocked as ive never seen a boxter been driven fast

Anyway, as we left the roundabout we both had heavy right feet... now obviously i didnt beat the boxter in a straight line with a 1.6 n/a car..... but by god he didnt pull away....much.... after about 500-600m of straight road he was no more than 15m ahead in the other lane.....

Sorry.... but i have to admit it dented my respect for the formidable Porsche badge..... but i do understand its possible... actually very likely... that this dude in the middle of his mid life crisis might not be the greatest at going up through the gears..... whereas i prob had by best shifts ever

Would yee be suprised that a Levin could keep up with a Boxter??? Are they not that great?

No intention to offend soc by the way  Dont hit me!

Porsche Turbos- old ones are fun too, 944s etc, the FTO has no problem keeping up. Many people may have far quicker cars than the FTO but they just don't know how to drive them!
I still can't believe how a 10 year old car (give or take) can still tackle most new cars today, they are visionaries the Japs- respect. :D

:D It's the 911 I'm in love with

Sounds like this boxster was a 2.5 and tiptronic - 204bhp but 0-60 in 7.4 secs. A manual would probably be a good bit ahead (2.5 does 0-60 in 6.7, 2.7 in 6.4 and 3.2 in 5.5)

Amazing car to drive but just not a 911...... 8)
