My man in Japan just sent me details of this Rare Beauty:

This Car is coming up in Fridays Auction,
1998 FTO GP Ver-R manual 92ks, grade 4, After market exhaust




Im seriously tempted to bring it in.... But i doubt it would sell...
The Irish market seems to prefer to buy 5000 euro, 1.8, 1995 FTOs with 100,000 miles that have been the country for 10 years!!!

That would be a bit of gamble alright.

A little cynical but I'd have to agree. The vast majority of FTO's in this country are '95's -and I believe that to an extent these have set the price level. General wisdom dictates that an FTO can be had for 5k to 7K. Trying to charge over that for a new and/or clean low mileage example can be difficult, shame really!

Id love to import quality FTOs but they are just impossible to sell

What auction site is the car coming up on? Had a look in autoterminal.com and didn't see a sign of it, just a couple of 95 white FTOs.

Just curious how much it goes for...

I was looking at idirect, any of the auction sites will have it.

Ya, autoterminal isn't an auction site in itself but it has a link to idirect and has stock itself. Didn't spot that fto in idirect, must have missed it!

Theres a few listed under your import guide

Its a great car but it would be difficult to justify the spend on the basis that a car 3 years older costs half the price. Theres a certain snobbery in this country when it comes to the year of the car you own so it might suit someone who isn't actually an enthusiast.

Found it, not sure its actually a manual though, looking at the sheet it as AT where transmission seems to go...

Anyone spot the FTO with an auction rating of 0.0?? Looks fine in the pics, wonder why it got a 0...

I only partially agree, Yes you could get a '95 for half the price, but lets face it, we are not talking big money anyway. Say 12 -13k not big money to spend on a car. Especially if you could get a freash well maintained import.

I think you are off the mark here CJ. Snobbery aside, a new car is always more desireable, all other things being equal, given average; wear, mileage, spec, price etc, (for the given age of a car) I personaly would always choose the newest one I could afford (that is for something to be my pride and joy!)

Manual as far as I can see...MT5 pretty conclusive!
(If you are looking at an actual auction sheet many of them have a section AT, this does not necessarily refer to the specific car having a auto gear box)

Manual as far as I can see...MT5 pretty conclusive!

I'm not sure, I was looking at a few on the page, another manual had F5 in exactly the same spot.

Had a look at the gun metal grey one, interesting colour, not bad...

cj. a 0 grade is usual given to water damaged vehicles, but can also apply to heavily modified vehicles too

Would have to agree with CJ here, I don't think anyone on this site would pay over the market value to importers for this car no matter how good it is. I think someone who has not expierence of the FTO would probably buy it for looks alone and spend way over the top. Certain importers are taking the P*** with their prices.

In some regards I totally agree - compared to other jap performance cars the FTO is definitely undervalued - great engine, great looks, great handling. Personally I think the interior is what really lets them down and as a result they can lose that special feeling. Added to the rediculous insurance rating this (IMHO) really effects the price - but that just means those in the know can get a real performance bargin

Are you sure it was that one Al. The imports from Japan usually take a minimum 7 weeks to get from there to here and thats without the wait in customs in both countries. Seeing it here and reg'd after only 3 weeks is very doubtful, but I could be wrong, it has been known
