Clutch?

Postby Muad_dib77 » Mon Mar 27, 2006 10:10 pm

LADS..I think something went wrong on the way back from the meet..
..my car has been revving a bit oddly lately - but now it's just gone mental..It's like there's a Rubberband going from the engine to the wheels.. When I but the pedal down - just a wee bit, the engine revs - but it takes a bit for the speed to build..then the revs drop abit..

I'm finding myself downshifting when going up hills...

Things are not well..

I fear something is rotten in the state of Denmark..(Or atleast in the state of my FTO)..

It does sound like the clutch alright, when its revving, and you're loosing power under load like you described.

Some of the guys with more technical knowledge may be able to verify this, but I swear I read it on this site somewhere as a way of checking if your clutch is slipping.
Put the car into 3rd gear when stopped & try to pull off. If it revs but you ain't going anywhere your clutch is slipping.

Definately wouldn't be moving much if I did that...

Was in Fifth the other evening - plonked my foot to the floor..car revved...but no movement.,

I wonder will 2 count as a group buy? Heheh

I was thinking if it would be an Idea to get a lighter fly wheel fitted at the same time as the new clutch..or are the two no-where near one another?

Also if anybody has any input on choice of clutch it would be most welcome..(and where to get it..This far I've only found one OE at 125gbp @ Camskill)

You could try deglazing it to see if that helps -

Get on a long straight road and get your speed up to 50/60mph, then while revving push the clutch in about half-way, then let it out again.

Flywheel is rite beside the clutch but they arnt really worth it in a road car. Theres always alot of talk about them in modded car circles but tbh its more of a pub chat mod than an actual performance increase mod. A couple of hundred would be betr spent on an exhaust and u could at least see it lol!
As regards a clutch, there isnt much of a requirement for a much higher spec than stock as the power hike through mods is USUALLY quite small. Il prob just buy an OE spec one

most probably the clutch is worn, but try the adjusters first ! is it cable or hydraulic operation ? check for free play. should be some

:? I actually don't know anything about the FTO GPX Clutch.. There's a master cylider so I'm assuming that it's a fluid system..but I could be wrong.

That Camskill clutch is fine Muad - I replaced mine wih this one - Freaky Parts in the UK sell a lightened flywheel and they are actually a good mod on an FTO - its so hard to get extra power from the FTO engine that it makes a lot of sense to go down this road instead.

Nice1 mate.

Clucth completely gave up on me last night going home from work..

I was in the fast lane on the m50 - doing just short of 120kmph...
when suddenly the engine revved wildly - and there was no powertransfer AT all..nothing..I had to dodge cars coming on to the m50 as this happend right next to the red cow sliproad - god what a nightmare..

..then ofcourse it turned out that my insurance recovery service only covers my car getting to a garage..ANY GARAGE! Guess who's the closest from the red cow.. Yup yer man Tynan the rip off... I've now arranged another garage to go and tow the car from the original towing company..
Oh and if I hadn't broken down on the M50 they would have left me at the roadside with no car...I'm thinking I'm calling my insurance company one of these days...

As for now..I have no car..Sucks slightly..

I actually seen your car today in the towing companies yard. I was delivering something to them and noticed it parked there, I wasn't sure it was yours untill I seen the wheels which I remembered from Saturday.

Thats really tough going mate, hope you get it sorted soon and get it back on the road. :(

Another bit of bad news for you mate is that ur flywheel MIGHT be scored from the clutch wearing out. My last one on the evo needed replacement when the clutch went pop altho it was able to be reconditioned. Not very likely but u wont know til u pull it apart. Fingers crossed :(

Just got confirmation from Mark @ http://www.importcarparts.co.uk

My clutch will ship out today - it should be with my Mechanic mid next week (2-3 day recorded delivery)

I got the Exedy clutch kit for 129.99gbp shipping came to 26gbp

I'm hoping it'll be possible to get my flywheel skimmed.

Cheers,

Be careful here, skimming too much off the fw makes it weaker which in turn makes it more susceptible to shattering in the event of an impact, for example. Shattered flywheel = no legs!

Hang on., I'm confused...would you not skim it to kinda recondition it? Or is the skimming actually just a way to make it lighter?

A bit of both, lads often skim the bejaysus out of flywheels to increase acceleration times.

Oh right...Well safety is pretty paramount..and although I do enjoy driving I'd like to keep my legs all the same..just in case I need to go upstairs or something... ;-)

Does anybody know anywhere that might do this - or will a normal garage be able to skim a flywheel a wee bit?

Any decent engineering shop will be able to stick a flywheel on a lathe and skim it, its not the sort of work a garage normally undertakes.

 Here's where the whole non-native thing becomes a bit of an issue..do you know where I'd be able to find an engeneering shop?

I don't even know what to look out for..
Places near rosemount/blanch would take preference..

Howard Engineering in Finglas should be able to do this work, details are:

Howard Engineering
Unit 24 Moyle rd Dublin Ind Est Glasnevin Dublin 11 Dublin T (01)8827555
F (01)8827554

If for some reason they can't, I'm sure they can recommend someone.
