the unknown black box in my FTO (see pic) (maybe speed conv)

Postby giuanz » Tue Nov 11, 2008 3:13 am

Hi,

Any clue what this box could be?

The labels report some numeric code and a "test" done on 05/98. They are in English not Japanese so I think it's a speedo converter. The hole on the top says "warranty void if removed" and hides a screw, I suppose it is a trimmer to regulate the pulse demultiplier, therefore it affects the speed reading.

My speedometer dial indeed has a label with "MPH" on it wich is simply attached on top of where "KPH" used to be. The fact is, I'd love to have the speedometer reading KPH not MPH.

What do you think? Is it a speedo converter or something else? Should I just play with the screw and see what happens? If I manage to regulate it to KPH, will the derestrictor still work?

Thanks!

Radio convertor?

Postby ftokl » Sat Nov 15, 2008 12:54 pm

Looks a bit like a radio frequency step convertor. Installed so the jap factory radio can tune into euro FM. Is it wired up near the radio connector?

Yes indeed. The original radio is gone. At import in '99 a new radio was fitted, according to the maintenance history. It is not there anymore but the owner forgot a JVC remote in the car :)

My mech (John O'Leary Motors in Ballincollig) has converted the reading back to kmph, did not tell me exactly how he did it but he does not seem to have touched that box.

Thankx for the tip, I guess I'll need to check whether this thing is connected to the radio connector - that'll be some screwdriver work in the next weekend, as soon as I receive the new radio I'm going to fit in.

Doubt very much it has anything to do with the radio.

Has it a connector on the end or are the wires tapped into the car harness.
Any markings on the other side of the unit.
