Tyres in Dublin

Postby Wildhound » Mon Jul 14, 2008 12:26 pm

I'm about to buy a full set of tyres as mine are worn pretty badly. Now the Goodyear F1s on Camskill are pretty damn cheap but does anyone know anywhere in Dublin that could offer a decent price? It would just be more convenient in terms of wait time and fitting.

The couple of places I've called have been looking for hilarious money. The size is 215/45/R17. Cheers guys.

Did you try DTAS?

Do a forum search - you'll find their details no bother.

Yeah - I got a good deal from DTAS recently on 205/50/R16. They also honoured a 5% discount on the tyres for FTO-Ireland.

Also a good opportunity to get the full Corgi alignment checked and corrected. Even though mine had been done 2 years ago, it had gone out again.

The car felt much better on the drive home - well worth doing.

You won't get cheaper than Camskill for the F1 Eagle GSD3's at the moment.
The retail price for those GSD3's in that size is somewhere close on €200 each - though as they've now been replaced by the Asymmetrics there seems to be a few good offers around.

The problem you are going to find is that most tyre fitters will not want to fit tyres bought elsewhere (and balance, track etc) - so its likely you'll have to drop a friendly tyre fitter a €50 note for a nixer.

Just pick up the yellow pages and give a few tyre fitters a call.
Get prices on similar performance tyres as the F1 Eagle GSD3's like the Pirelli P Zero Nero, Bridgestone RE050's & Toyo T1-R's etc

Also compare to prices on the middle range (& still decent performance) tyres such as the Falken 452's, Federal SS595's etc

Avoid crap tyres like Champiros, Nankang, Nitto, Wanli, Nexan, Kenda, Duro, Sunni. Linglong etc etc etc - good way to ruin a nice sports car.

Cheers guys, just called DTAS, was talking to a very friendly chap called Rob, gave me an excellent price which is not all that far off Camskill, and that includes fitting and aligning! I'm well chuffed. Going up tomorrow to get them fitted.

Also, 5% discount is nothing to be sniffed at. ;)

He's the owner / manager and we've been using him since he set up a few years ago.

Speaking of tyres can anyone tell me if Furio tyres are any good?

I think by virtue of the fact that this name will be new to most / all of us, it may be worth steering clear.

Let someone else be the guinea pig.

I wouldn't say Furio would be a suitable tyre for an FTO. I'm not knocking these type of brands - I'm sure they have their uses - but these uses should be restricted to lower power family runarounds not higher performance sports cars. Dry and Wet weather grip will be reduced and braking distances increased - probably not an issue if you are bringing your Micra to the shops - but very likely an issue if you're taking your FTO for a brisk spin up the Healy Pass.

This seems to be a rather touchy subject. Unless they can sell you their overpriced wares they are not intersted in the easy money of fitting tyres that you've supplied yourself. Citing insurance (as opposed to greed) as the reason why they cannot fit the tyres for you. Instead of picking up ~€12 a corner, €48 Euro, for 20-30 minutes work, (where the hourly rate in a back street garage is only about €50 per hour). They'd rather tell you to go and jump  Once the recession bites these lads might become a little less choosey. In the meantime check the eiretyres website for a list of participating fitters. I was surprised to find two in my locality. I think my next set of tyres will be coming from the UK.....

I was thinking as much. I just thought someone here might know about them. An alloy wheel trader I know got a batch of them in and is selling them cheap...must be a reason

I just bought two of the new asymmetrical F1s from Camskill.
They came in quickly and at a good price, getting fitted today.

As for garages not liking you buying your own parts, try some of the smaller outfits.

My local mechanic was only too happy to fit them...

Went up today and got my new tires. Very good service there. They also alerted me to the fact that my front pads were dangerously close to bare metal, and my tracking was VERY off.

So I ended up spending a lot more than intended, but the car drives like a whole new monster. Chuffed. Highly recommend this place.

Went for the Goodyear Eagle F1s. The ones that were on it were absolute muck, so there's no comparison really. I'm looking forward to trying them out in the wet since the car was on ice-skates before.

Between the tires, the tracking and the brakes, the car handles a thousand times better, it's a staggering improvement. All that's left now is to sort out the clutch!
