recommend me a Hid conversion kit please :)

Postby blackphoenix626 » Sat Jan 14, 2012 9:44 pm

95 GR 2.0l

Well lads whats the scraic with ye, just looking through the thread here and saw a lad talking about bulbs for his hid conversion kit and got me thinking i should upgrade my self so i said id ask ye as i havnt a clue when it comes to theses lights.

Im looking for that nice blue look at night, if ye could link me to a ebay page of what would be a good buy id appreciate it.

i found this but dunno if there good or not....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XENON-HID-CON ... 45f91ef8f6

that says its only the dip beams so first question i guess is

1. is it worth/possible to get the fullbeams done as well and is it worth it?

2. if i want a nice blue colour would i go for the "ice white/v slight blue" or "noticably blue" or "deep blue" and how would this effect the brightness etc?

3. any idea how much a mechanic would charge to fit these?

4. would these lights pass a nct, it says for off road use only, i see boys going around with them the whole time, are they just switching them out for the nct?

5. bulb type, they say they will send 6000k if i dont specify and that sounds very high, so what bulb type?

im sure these questions have been asked before so im sorry for repeating, all advise is welcome :)

I recommend buying from http://www.fto-shop.com/

You could go for the very slight blue at 8000k and they will pass the nct no problem. Any more blue and you risk a fail. The dipped beams are enough if you get white led bulbs for the parking lights and the fogs. Apparently it is a bad idea to do the full beams, as the life span can be shortened by flashing them. Every set means another set of ballasts. Personally I think the dipped beams with led is enough. The bumper needs to come off to intall them, so the average garage/mechanic is circa €60 per hour. You would be talking €100-€200 fitting. You're much better off getting them installed when other work is getting done. You could phone around for prices, you may get a good deal, but you could do it yourself too. The removal of the bumper is the biggest pain.

I didn't need to remove my bumper. That's only if you have factory hids. Upgrading halogen to hid doesn't require a bumper removal,

Also nct may be a problem as bulbs may not throw the correct light pattern on a model that originally had halogens.

I wouldnt pay £60 sterling for that set unless they're anything different to the cheap ones on eBay (which I suspect they aren't)

Like Colm said if its an aftermarket set then they are installed without removal of bumper and pretty easy to do, so I wouldn't bother getting a mechanic to do it. I'm sure either yourself or someone you know could do it very easily. Just mount the ballast somewhere discreet and you're fine.

ok ill go for the slight blue at 8000 and get led's for the parks and fogs. i can try and put them in myself but ive never done so or seen it done and would be just following the instructions in the box, as long as it isnt rocket science i should be able to do them. cheers lads

It's easy.

the only snag you may have, there's a wire clip that holds in the bulb. it may be necessary to slightly loosen the screw holding this in. this will make it less of a tight fit and make the job way easier.

similar to this one, the screw on the left

I had mine installed in the garage. They had the bumper off to remove the old hid kit and install the new one, thats all i know. They may have had it off for other reasons, as I was getting loads of stuff done. Bought the hid kit from ftooc and got a very nice discount, so didn't pay full price, but atleast I knew i was getting good quality hids that were road legal. I saw too many complaints about chite being sold on ebay when it comes to hids, so i played safe. There are plenty of videos on youtube if self install is considered. Looks easy enough.

I bought mine here. http://stores.ebay.ie/Hids4you
The higher the number (e.g 6000K, 8000K) the lower the light output.
I thought the 8K were a little too blue so I went for the 6K and for the sake of being different I went for the 50watt set.

Whichever ones you go for it's the 9006 bulbs you need for the dipped beam.
The stock FTO lights are woefully inadequate you won't believe the difference.

Here's my before and after.

Getting LEDs for the parks and fogs will finish the job nicely.
I'm not sure of the bulb types you'd need as I think the prefacelift might be different but look out for fog bulbs like these.

Aren't the parkers just 5 watt capless bulbs?

I don't know. I've spent very little time looking under the bonnet. You're probably right considering how badly colorised the kit was that came out of it.

That kit you show there from eBay is fine. I have been using eBay kits for years on both the FTO and Audi and even though the price is cheap, they are perfect. I wouldn't pay any more for any of the expensive kits if i was you. All of these pass the NCT no problem either.

I like the look of those slim ballasts as well - fitting is simple, no skills or experience required as long as you can open the bonnet

I had a look myself but couldn't see the same ones either.
The nearest ones on their website seem far more expensive than I remember too but to be honest I wouldn't be too worried about where you get them.
Once you know the bulb type (9006 HB4) and the colour temperature you want just search ebay and you'll find loads (too much choice).
It's up to yourself after that to pick ones at the right price from a trusted seller.

For the parks you need one with loads of leds, the single led ones aren't bright enough

The difference is the parking lights are built into the headlight cluster on facelift models.

loads of FTOs don't have fogs.

They all have the cluster with the indicators, but a lot just have no fogs in them.

If you had fogs, you'd have a foglight switch beside the speedo on the right.

behind the indicator stalk.

As an aside, factory fogs never come on with the parking lights from the stalk.
unusually, on an FTO, even if the lights are off, and you turn the fogs on at the dash switch, the parking lights front and rear also come on.
