How to paint FTO brake calipers

Whell nice & shiny day in the morning so i decided to do a bit of DIY again on the FTO.

First , i started with the FRONT brake pads ( discs were ok so i left the old disc on )
I'm embarased by how they look



new ones :


- on the back i will do them next weekend when i will have new discs as well.

Then i said it's a good opportunity to paint those callipers ( bought a
couple of months ago some paint from Halfords - FOLIATEC that is )

Looks well - how long did it take you and how many coats did you do?

2 coats of paint

(thats what it says on the instructions - so that you could do all 4 of them with the same paint )

.. well in terms of time spent hmm, 2-3 mins cleaning rust 15-20 mins / coat then ,with 15 mins break between the coats .
i'll see in a couple of months how it will turn .

how hard/easy is it to do???

well the Foliatec paint is from halfords ( i paid 25-30 euro i think) but i,ve seen it other motorfactors so i guess it's not hard to find.

It's easy enough i mean you just have to be patient and have a full day in wich you dont travell with the car

nice job seb..... i used same make and colour on mine. when set the paint is as hard as nails...... big tip before you start........ make sure there are no rain clouds about.... i start mine on a lovely sunny hot day, i let them dry (2 coats), was sitting in me house having a cuppa and it started to bucket down outside, two calipers had to be redone........ god damn irish weather , guess thats another reason why im moving to Oz soon

Did you remove the callipers to paint or do it on the car?

It can be done on the car, just buy hammerite paint and apply with a brush, much cheaper and easier than buyign the spray stuff, less mess and looks brighter and better too. Just mask your pads and discs and you're away for road.

Would I be able to use paint from the same code as the car. Mines a pretty sexy blue and I thinkin matching callipers tru white alloys would look sick.

Probably, though its not going to be massively obvious its the same blue through the alloy. What are your alloys like? Can you see a lot of the caliper through them?
I dont think it has to be a heat resistant paint, but I think the hammerite external paint would be a different quality to paint used on a car, (correct me if I'm wrong someone), the paint used on a car wouldnt be as strong or might be a thinner quality as it has to come through a spray gun, maybe I dont know.

Ya der 7 spoke so there's a lot of calliper visible. I had red ones on my mazda and dey really looked the business. They were done when I got it tho. I'd reli love to c what tthey'd look like matching. Ders a pic o the car as my profile pic.

wow now that a resurrection after 2 years:)

pained them on the car with the brush , better finishing and less mess .
i bought heat resistant paint just to be on the safe side.

Just make sure u CLEAN the calipers extremely well before painting

so u didn't use the paint code off the car no?

the paint i got was standard Foliatec RED , special caliper paint and as i said it was ( and still is ) around 30 quid.
Haufrauds has it ( in different colors) and i saw that at a few motor factors as well .

Would I not need the same shade of blue as my car tho or else tghey wouldn't match?

that's up to you i'm afraid.


if you use same color code , non heat resistant paint might look awful in a few months , brakes do tend to get extremely hot .

I dont think it would need to be an exact match, just as close as possible.
