Car was hit on the way to work this morning - am gutted!

Postby Muad_dib77 » Wed Sep 28, 2005 10:53 am

I just don't believe this - I've been driving my FTO for what...3weeks at the most. And this morning some guy drives right into me.

"I'm really sorry, I just didn't see that truck."

He shouldn't be looking for trucks, he should be looking at the car in front of him. God!

It looks like I'll be needing a new rear bumper sooner than I thought.

*sigh* - OPen season on FTOs these days?

Does anybody know a good body-shop In the Drogheda area?

Sorry to hear that! Much damage done?

Jay has been selling replacement bumpers, might be a few around that people would be happy to get rid of?

Sounds like an oportunity to stick an aftermarket rear on - perhaps one of Jays on - you will also need to balance this with side skirts and perhaps a front splitter as well - Give Jay a shout - he may be able to come up with a package for less than the price of a standard Mitsu rear bumper at Mitsu retail prices. Get a price from Mitsu Ireland for the rear bumper - and compare to the total cost of the kit from Jay.

If it was me I'd be looking at the DC lip front spoiler - the DC Side skirts and a TM or Veilside rear.

Sh!t, sorry to hear this Maud.... there must be something in the water these past few weeks :?

I can recommend John in Kelly's Garage in Lusk. He'll be doing the bodywork repairs on my gti and he's done repairs to my old GS (years ago) - he's very good, takes his time and something of a perfectionist.....

Surely I can't do this on somebody else's insurance?!? (didn't mean to call you by girlsnames (Surely/Shirley)..pun doesn't work in writing!)

I think I might go for yer man in Lusk!

The guy whio drove in to me just rang me and recommended a body shop. - Only it's some guy "down the road"

Cool guy though for actually calling me.

You need to get a quote (agreed by all parties) for the repair to the rear bumper and then see if you can get a custom bumper fitted for the same price - the rest of the gear you'd have to pay for yourself

Be very careful when selecting who you get to do the work as a poor job will only come back to bite you after it's too late (i.e. the job is done and paid for) - especially if you get chiping and flaking a few months later....

sorry to hear that, you should get a quote in writing from Mitsi Ireland for a replacement of the rear bumper and if that's say 500, then add another couple of hudred and you could get yourself a nice body kit and get the lot fitted, you just add the extra expense of fitting your parts...... cheaper than doing it in bits and pieces!!

Oh yeah - that's sounds like a neat idea - I'll get a quote by a mitsi garage.
He'll then sort things out with his insurance - and I should end up with a cheque. Is that how it works?

Never did anything like this before.

Sorry to hear that Maud, I appreciate how much of a pain in the a$$ a knock can be. Did the guy mention the name of the local panel beater?

He did it's a bloke called David Cunningham

Phone number is: 087 688 8404

I think I'll be gettting a quote of a Mitsi Garage instead though - the bumper is bent, not cracked but bent - afaik it's nearly impossible to straighten them back out cause of the material(correct?).

Has anybody here any experience with the process after getting the quote?

Never heard of him. I use a panel beater in Clonsilla, he'll take a look at it for you anyway and give you an honest opinion, Name is John Davey, his details are on the Services page of the main site.

CJ:--->

This far I'm not - but I expect that when I get the quote for a new bumper he wont feel like taking the money from his own wallet - and then claim with his insurance.

I'm kinda of the impression that he just wants me to get it sorted on the cheap - which is something I'm not really too keen on - I want a "proper job".

You need to get a proper quote and decide if you're going to go through the insurance or not pretty quick.

Have you got all of his insurance details? If you are going to go through the insurance you'll need to notify his insurance company and the guards as soon as possible, if you haven't done so already.

If you can get a proper quote quickly I'd put it to him and tell him that if he pays you CASH the next day you won't have to go through the insurance, otherwiase you'll have to report it to the Guards and his insurance company. I wouldn't give him any leaway - I've been screwed over once by a 'nice' guy who strung me along and never paid - I never got the money and had to repair myself.

The best of luck with it.

I agree with what JD said - just be careful the "nice guy" isn't just doing so to try and get you to feel sorry for him and get a cheap job done but at the same time I don't advocate trying to screw him or his insurance company. Get a quote asap from a good bodywork guy on what work is required for the best job!

Btw, did you call the garda? You should ALWAYS call the garda.

Cool!

Didn't call the Garda yet - but I'll do that within the hour!

Thanks for helping me guys - I haven't a clue how this stuff works in Ireland.

I'm not out to rip him off, that would just be mean. - I just don't want my car to be held together with stickytape and chickenwire.

Oh dear god,

That has to suck! I was planning on installing my alarm over the next couple of days - but as this has occured and the weather it crap (to say the least) I think I'll spend the time getting the car fixed - and possibly have somebody fit my alarm for me.

Just rang the Gardai (Sp.?) in Blanch he asked me to pop down after work.
All they need is his details and they'll sort out the rest - with his insurance details.

Pretty neat that.

Actually I went to the Blanchardstowen garda station last night - and waited there for about 50 minutes! (The match was on, we could hear the cheering in the back room! FFS!!! ) Only to be told that they wouldn't file a case unless there was any injured parties wth..I was gobsmacked - I told this Garda that the Garda I spoke to on the phone had asked me to come down so he could get the details. :?
Still no joy. He just wouldn't do it.
I was ever so slightly p'ed off when I left - complete waste of my time, and after being in work for more than 10hours I didn't really find it very exciting hanging around a Garda station. :(

Anyway I just spoke to the bloke yer man(let's call him Joe Bloggs) recommended. He says he has done work on other FTOs - and he's just around the corner from me (Kentstown), So I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt - go there and atleast let him have a look at it. He can tell me what he's going to do before doing it - and if I'm not happy I'll go through the insurance.

If he's any good he might get to sort out the dings as well. We'll see.

The Joe Bloggs seems to be reluctant to get insurance involved. He has actually gone through the lenghts of calling this panelbeaterbodyshoppainter-person and giving him "carte blanche" to do what ever needs to be done to fix the damage. I kinda smell a rat, but then there's no point in always seeing the worst in people - I can always say "No! This isn't what I want. You crashed in to my car - we're going through insurance!"..

Ah the joy & bliss.

 OMG! You poor thing! That sucks a$$!! I think you should make sure you're comfortable with what you're getting done to the car. I'm sure he's being lovely, but don't let that cloud your feelings for your poor bashed FTO!

It'll all get sorted - just make sure Mr Nice Guy doesn't start working a guilt trip on you. I'd so be the type to feel sorry for him.... DON'T DO IT!!! At the end of the day, he did crash into you so he has to put that right :D

I can understand where he's coming from, an NCB can be worth a few quid.
If you can get him to cough up for a couple of other dints and scrathces, it might be worth your while. That said, I can understand your suspicion, you should be OK once you have all his details, if you're not happy with the wway things are going at any stage, call him and tell him you're going thru the insurance.
