Spark Plug Leads

Postby rsg » Tue Aug 23, 2005 12:44 pm

Hey guys,

I'm busy replacing my rear spark plugs on my 95 GR and I'm wondering what the order of the spark plug leads should be? I didn't see any markings and can't find anything in the manual - its currently setup like so:

REAR
1 2 3

4 5 6
FRONT

1 & 5
2 & 6
3 & 4

Is that correct? The car is still very much underpowered but I've decided to keep it and get everything done myself.

Hope someone can help! Thanks - Raf

Piston order looking from the front of the car..

135
246

Connect your leads as per diagram below -

1-4
2-5
3-6

So yeah - it is set up correct at present - think you would know all about it if it wasn't

BTW RSQ - did you change your cambelt yet - Is it a tooth or 2 out by any chance - the ECU may be compensating hence the power drop.

Thanks Myfeckin FTO - That will be usefull because I've looked everywhere!

I finally got my my a$$ in gear and started doing stuff to the car again. Front and back plugs were wrong - BKR6E's on front and back!

That "mech" really took me for a ride - live and learn I guess.

I haven't checked the timing belt yet but thats next on my list. Cars feeling smoother after the plug change - so thats good - still think the plug coils may be leaking spark on occasion. If it turns out not to be the cambelt then I'll be completely stumped.

No errors codes, no miss, higher octane fuel makes no difference and car running perfectly except it's way underpowered...?

Thanks again for the help

Well - the plug type is ok - just not ideal to have them in the back as they are a fairly cheap plug with just a 15,000 mile lifespan. I have Denso Iridiums in mine all round - 60K mile life and increased performance to boot.

If you buy the recommended NGK plugs, they are circa ~€3 -€4 each for the front ones. The rear ones are circa ~€20 each

If you're looking for p/ns etc, check out the bottom of the page on the buying guide: http://www.fto-ireland.com/buyingguide.html

Have a look at Camskills site for guide prices on the various plug types, bear in mind thatMivec and non-Mivec engines use different plugs: http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m3b0s9p0

Thanks lads, I gave Paul Nolan a ring yesturday, he said it can be expensive to do the plugs, but from all the good feedback on this site about him, I don't think I have any worries.
Thanks for all the advice.

I've never been to Paul Nolan, but out of curiousity, what is 'expensive'? did he put a figure on it?

It can be expensive mostly based on the labour involved in replacing the rear plugs - hence why I spent the money on the Denso Iridiums - 60K miles and increased performance to boot - what you'll spend on better plugs will save you in the long run.

Paul told me around 140 to replace the plugs, which I think is expensive, but as said its the labour involved with the rear plugs.

It's a bit tricky but not a huge job either. IIRC it took me about an hour and a half or so -but obviously theres was a learning curve there as it was my first time.

Does this figure include the parts? i.e the plugs themselves (and possibly an inlet manifold gasket).
The price of the parts can vary hugely depending on what spec and where you buy, and whether you use standard or long life plugs on the front bank.
