High Idle

Postby asti_mivec » Thu Apr 10, 2008 11:37 am

Hi there,

I'm sorry if this has been posted but I've been searching and cannot find answers to this specific question. Anyway... I recently bought a 95 GPX manual and absolutely love it. There are a few things that need to be done and I am in the process of getting these done, but one thing that I want to know is.

Do all FTO's rev quite high until warmed up? I'm not sure if it is a feature of the engine design to help warm them up quicker so mivec is available or if there's something wrong. Every time I start from cold it will rev at about 2,300 rpm and gradually get lower as she warms until idling perfectly at about 800. Sometimes there is also a load squeaking noise too.

If anybody has any info please let me know.

Thanks,
a

the squeaking noise is likely to be one of the two aux belts - check them both for tension & wear..

It's normal for the FTO to idle high when cold - yes - can't remember what my cold figure is, but if it decreases gradually I'd say you're fine.

It may be possible to adjust the cold idle using the screws on the inlet - but if she's not conking out on you I'm not sure I'd fiddle with it.

I never really noticed this on the GPX ('94) but the idle speed on the new GX ('99) behaves exactly as asti_mivec describes it. When I had the manifold off change the plugs recently, I removed the stepper motor and cleaned it for preventative maintanence purposes (wasn't too coked up), this didn't impact on the cold idle speed. After about 5mins, the idle will drop down to normal (700 - 800rpm) and everthings fine from there on. As such, theres no point in messing with the idle screw, the car may cut out when warm if its adjusted from cold. I came to the consulsion that this was 'normal' behavior but couldn't understand why the GPX didn't exhibit the same trait.

I'd be interested to hear other owners experiences, please state your model for the benefit of the group.

95 GPX, never idled that high when cold, usually goes to about 1200 RPM, maybe a little more.

Mine revs up a bit when I start it, not sure exactly how high (~1600 ish?) but gradually creeps back down again.

Hmm, this high idle (i.e. 2k or above) from cold seems to be more apparent on the GR\GX it sould seem, I'm wondering if theres a reason behind this....
