Suspension knocking

Postby kevinod » Mon Mar 06, 2006 12:58 pm

Guys,

I think I've fitted new shocks under false pretences... I had 2 problems, a knocking on the right front, and the back left is doing strange things too.

I thought the knocking on the right front was the shock gone, but with a new KYB in there (and new Apex spring) its still the same, maybe slightly improved.

I did replace the ARB bush and droplinks on the front not that long ago (I'll have to check back, maybe ~ a year ago) so they should be ok I think? How do you tell if the droplink is gone, is it when you can easily move the ends around?

I'm going to order a good few bushes for it, get it all renewed & sorted out. Which bushes need to be pressed in out on the front?

On the back left, its not knocking, but when I go around a ~90 degree corner at any speed at all it's nearly like its bouncing or off the ground or something, except its not, if that makes any sense! Hard to describe, it sounds like the spring is being slightly compressed or stretched. I thought maybe the shock was gone there too.

I did find a bush (rear lower arm outer bush) on the back left that needs to be replaced, was very loose, could wiggle it around so it's probably the problem I'm thinking...

Has anyone had the same problems?

Kev.

Kev - been down this road before - I just changed virtually every bush I could get my hands on - Camskill have the lot - the bushes are reasonably cheap - its the labour thats the pain. BTW - some of the bushes that looked fine when on the car looked shot when taken off so its difficult to tell the condition in a couple of cases.

I'd just go ahead and replace all the bushes with poly items - Paul Nolan replaced the front bottom arm bushes on my old GR for me with some positive castor bushes from camskill and this solved some knocking I'd had for ages.

Did you replace the top mounts when you fitted the new shocks? If not then this might be a good idea?
