cambelt change

Postby mcgon1979 » Tue Apr 10, 2007 9:51 am

hi all,

I bought the cambelt kit from camskill. it has timing belt, ps belt, alternator belt, and tensioner wheel.
A friend of mine said most V6s have a gas filled tensioner like a mini shock absorber it looks like. hmmm... maybe this is not on the 2litre mivec? anyone know about this? I presume everytyhin I need is in the kit and if I needed a shock absorber style tensioner it would be there?

cheers all. :?:

There's one on there alright, on the tensioner for the cambelt itself. Mine was fine, so I didn't replace it.

Have you seen the workshop manuals, it has diagrams and that info in it. Downloads page - click here.

ah I see... but its obviously not recommended to change at the 60km interval? no mention of it in any of the kits. I'll have a read of that link. thanks very much. :)

The workshop manual has a test to let you know how the tension rod thingy is. If you're worried about it sure replace it, wouldn't be expensive I'd say, but afaik its not included in the kits as standard.

hi Kev,

thanks for the info. just reading up on the manuals now. My mechanic reckons he has done a galant and the kit had one, and a few of the other engines that had them changed them. I dunno. I bought the standard kit. belts and tensioner. If I wait till the engine comes apart to test it I won't have time to order it in from england. I also notice camskill don't seem to stock them. might just chance that its fine. Anyone else any input? ever had any probelms with the hydraulic tensioner? thanks again

I had a new belt stuck on mine at 45000mls (had engine replacement so I figured I'd be better off!) - the thought of replacing the entire tensioner didn't even occour to me..if it had - I would have! I had the belt and the tensioner wheel/bearing replaced - it's running super!

On that note I'd like once again to mention how Brill Paul Nolan is..super nice guy as well.
