Choice of alarm

Postby Muad_dib77 » Mon Sep 12, 2005 4:25 pm

Just a quick question really.

Does the FTO key have one of those chips in it?

As I don't see any mention of Immobiliser anywhere on my car I stongly doubt it. Just wanted to be certain before buying an alarm with remote start - and then not being able to use it cause of the chip thing.

( I know I know, remote start is for posers - I happen to think it's pretty neat, especially coming up to the less warm season...Uhm crispy hot car..)

Awesome, thanks. :smt041

I need to get one fitted ASAP. Untill it shows up the battery will be sitting in the house. I'm not taking any chances! - no battery = no fun for thieving plonkers. :smt023

That covers the pm I just sent ya..

might be worth doing a bit more to immobilise it though, someone bad minded could always come back with a battery if they discovered that was what was missing...

I've a meta alarm + a separate 2 point immobiliser, and I've discovered how to stop the immobiliser from turning off too. :D

I did a wee bit of research and it seems that remote start isn't popular with manual because of a safety issue.

Imagine the following scenario.

Joe Bloggs has left car in gear.
Mr. Bloggs proceeds to remote start car.
Car attempts to start whilst in gear - jumps - and crashed into something.
Mr. Bloggs experiences issues with insurance company...

on an Auto/TIP It seems it's simple enough to place a switch so the remote start will only be functional when in car is in Park - however the process is slightly more complicated on a manual...

I suppose the trick is to get into the habbit of not leaving the car in gear when parked.

Am currently trying to gather info on some kits from Hong Kong - and some American/Canadian stuff.

Could be exciting times these...

Ok Got the kit with DHL today.
Got caught in customs ..bah.. They charged me 23euros..Not impressed.
Emailed seller and asked him to stick "gift" on future orders.

All seems to bee there - feels like a sold piece of kit - the remotes look a tad "Made in China"

Will be fitting Thursday/Friday - should be excting.

Features include

Remote start/stop
Remote Cetral locking
3 Point Immobilizer
LCD display to let me know what the car is doing at any given time
Pager Function - With Vibrate..(Woo)

Oh and the box has picture of a porsche on it, so it MUST be quality ;-)

I hope I don't break my baby!

Total cost was 89usd (item+shipping) + 23euro (customs grrr.)

Intially he was only selling these alarms as "Buy It Now" at 99.00usd - he has since started selling them as ordinary auctions.

IMO I got it pretty cheap - I'll make sure to take loads of piccies and stuff as I go through the installation process - there will undoubtfully be a degree of wirecutting.

I initially set out to NOT buy from hongkong - but that was exactly what I ended up doing. The American and English products are exactly the same. They're just being sold under different brands - very frustrating.

I have also purchased a 6.5" Touchscreen Dvdplayer thingy including a 6disc dvd changer from this bloke, ended up at 360something euro-smackers (w.o shipping & customs)- in the process of bidding on some sunvisor screens - not that I think I'll be using them much..

Mmm, I may be a cynic but that sounds a bit cheap for a quality kit..... I would have expected to pay 500+ for a quality alarm (and that's a good price)

Oh yeah..It is cheap..No doubt.
And it's not a cobra kit (like the GF had on her Polo back in the day).

However the build quality seems to be alright - and although it's an unknown asian manufacturer it feels alright.

There's a booklet with instructions in English (not Engrish) - and it's actually a proper booklet, unlike some other stuff I've seen where you'd just get a photocopied A4 with 7 different laguages.

I'm fairly confident that it's alright - it's aboviously not Thatcham approved - and it doesn't have a locator.
It should however make the car "not move" when it's not supposed to, and let it move when I want it to.

I'll see what happens when it's in.

****Update****
Just noticed I gave the wrong price - it was in fact 89euros rather than dollars.. still cheapo though.

Agree - sounds very very inexpensive for a decent alarm...Especially with all the add-on bits like the pager etc. But hey, if it works out for you then we'll all know where to go!

Went and got criping tool and loads of "spades" & stuff yesterday - so I almost ready to "get in on". ;-)
