Electric window motors

Postby Sgt_Major » Thu Jul 02, 2009 10:41 am

Are the passenger and driver side motors different? I noticed my drivers side window will go up or down automatically after a short activation of the switch, but the passenger side needs manually held the whole way up or down.

Is that normal?

If so, can you fit a drivers side motor to the passenger side door?

If so, anyone breaking got one I could buy?

it's perfectly normal, the drivers side has an auto function, passenger hasn't.

motor and regulator are one unit AFAIK and regulators are different. not sure what'd happen if you took one apart.

which side do you need?

I think you can take the mechanism apart to such a degree that the motor itself can be mounted on either door.

Perhaps steelroe has some input?

cos it's a pain in the hole having to keep the switch on til the window goes up :)

I'm fond of driving with the windows down and I dont like having my right hand off the wheel for any longer than absolutely necessary as Ive problems with my left hand spasming which wouldnt be good if it was controlling the car ;)

the auto up/down isn't on the passenger side for safety reasons. the FTO windows don't have anti-pinch mechanisms so it's not safe to be able to inadvertantly catch someones arm/hand in the passenger window without noticing.

It takes a bit of force for them to reverse, try sticking your head out the window before pressing the button

tried it with an apple (a trick I sometimes used at work to demonstrate how they worked) put it this way, you don't wanna be an apple in an FTO window.

Thank god I'm not an apple :)

Apart from the obvious safety issue of nipping people in the window, does anyone think it can be done?
