Points question

Got booked for speeding back in June , my fault as I was going a wee bit over the limit in town. Cop gave me the fine and I asked him if I was getting points and he said "NO" Paid fine, first fine in 8 years of driving.
So yesterday I get a letter in the post telling me that i've got 2 points on my licence from the episode in June, 5 months earlier.
Well pissed off, and rang up the penalty points place in Mayo and they said that those fines automatically carry points and that the cop shouldn't have told me that I wasn't getting any.
Is this the case or has anyone else had any stories like this? And was piggy just totally incompetant as he should know the bloody law? All can I do now is maybe complain to the cops, i know i'm wasting my time but it's the principle of it.
And to make matters worse the points go on my licence from Nov 29,NOT 5 months previously like maybe they should?

Sorry for yer troubles, but unfortunately for you i think you're screwed. My general rule in any dealings with the cops is, if you get a ticket there and then, you're gonna get the points.
This could turn into the longest post ever if i went into the whole " have they nuthin better to do " but for future reference, keep him talkin, if he hasnt put pen to paper ( ie ticket ) then you're in with a chance of gettin off, the more you give it the " im decent and nice and good ill never do it again " the better chance he's not gonna write you up.
Not much use to you now
Take the points, move on.

Sorry if that seemed a bit rude, but speeding carried penalty points for ages before other offences were added to the list. for ages it was the only thing you could get penalty points for. I just couldn't imagine how you wouldn't know. Sorry.

I think its clear from Marks original post that he knows well that speeding =points, but the cop said 'No' when he asked him. The cop should have known better, or he was just acting the eejit! either way I can appreciate your frustration Mark on getting the points five months later after being told you wouldn't!

I'd say just chalk it down to experience Mark and don't give another thought, I don't think anyone considers having 2 points as anything too serious these days.

At present I can't get points in Ireland (only a metter of time before some Gardai somewhere figures out how to turn on the PC I suppose)
and my license is valid till I'm 78! Crazy!

Thanks JD, guys. I know it's trivial almost, I guess I had some degree of faith in the police and the time difference is pretty annoying. I think it's been a bit of a grey area about whether or not it's up to the Guard to bestow points at his/her discretion. All I want to do is show my annoyance for a system that doesn't work before it has even got started. A letter or email to the police station is all i'll do not that it will do anything! End rant and drive safe!!

Hey Muad, can you legally carry a Danish license while living here without having to change it to an Irish one?
I passed my test in the late 80's in GB and didn't really want to change to an Irish one when I came home as I knew I'd possibly be working abroad for a few years shortly after. Also the license was valid until I'm 70. Customs forced me to re-register my car with an Irish plate in 1990 and I was reminded on a few occasions by the lawboys to transfer my license to an Irish one. I had to do this anyway as I had three penalty points on it and they caused meltdown in the Irish insurance companys (the average price of insurance for a twentysomething in the early 90's was about £46 Billion)

I'm guessing your loophole is you still have a Danish address.

ps. sorry you had to be fecked around by the boys in blue Mark but I'm far from surprised.

Last time I was stopped it was mentioned that I "Really should consider changing" but as my license is an "EU" License it's not a legal requirement.

Insurance companies don't seem to mind either, so I'm happy out - for the time being anyways..

Thought so, I had no problem with my Irish license living on mainland Europe but as I say Ireland was a confusing time in the early 90's for the begrudgers.
Back when our national Hero was Jack Charlton.

since we're swapping stories here, I did the reverse with my license - I had a healthy swathe of points on my english one so I swapped it for a clean Irish one.

Got two points last month though.
