I had a hissing sound and then a clunking noise after reversing as well at the weekend.

Turned out to be the neighbours cat
(Sorry I know this is of no help whatsoever)

Left front or rear? The gearbox is left of centre at the front of the car, can you feel any vibration on the pedal? Any problems with forward gears?

Few questions for you -

Is it more noticeable when starting from cold?
Is there any jolt or lurch from the car or is it just a sound?
When you select reverse - does it reverse immediately?
When was the last time you changed your gearbox oil?

its from the left im sure.... that hissin has stopped now and its just that banging or clunking noise again and the car does jolt or something a bit alright. it doesent always happen maybe it would happen four or five times in a row then it would be ok for a while and start up again, me heads wrecked.
i only got the car in october so i dont know if the oil had been changed...
cheers lads

If I were you I would start with a gearbox oil change and an ECU reset (disconnect battery for 40mins).

ill try that. so what type of oil and stuff do i need?
one more question, when i start the car up in the mornings or havent been driving it for a few hours on a cold day the steering is really stiff and is hard to turn the wheel but loosens up in about 20 secs, any ideas what this is? maybe power steering fluid needs changing also...?

just reset the ecu, and the transmission fluid looks ok.
not any difference at all.
was just looking at the workshop manual and have been having a good look at the engine while its being put into reverse, think it has something to do with the inhibitor switch or the arm that moves it into position.
makes a clicking sound like its struggling or something...
and noticed my engine jumps alot when the gear is changed to reverse from park, is this normal...?
cheers again lads.
