New gauges.

Postby TopCat » Fri Dec 12, 2008 1:52 pm

Some of you will have seen this at the last meet, but for the rest of you, here are some new dials I've installed in the centre console. They're a Vac and oil pressure gauge, and put them in after wrapping the lower centre console in CF. Still a bit of tidying up to do on it, but you get the idea...

And installed..

BTW, the little switch on the RHS I installed so I can turn them on and off when I want. They are bright at night so I turn them off sometimes.
(Sorry about the pic quality, camera phone ..)

Saw those at the meet, they do look well!

I have gauges in a box I haven't got around to fitting for ages, complete with a-pillar holders. Will need to work out wiring though, think they dim a bit when you turn on the lights (like the air con display).

Did you drill a new hole to route the wiring/vacuum tubing, or manage to fit them in with existing wiring?

I actually had MfFTO's old mechanic doing some other work on it at the time, so he put in the sensors. Its just a single wire from the oil pressure and a small tube for the vac that you have to run in to the car. But I didn't do it myself so can't be much help there I'm afraid.

Am.. *cough* well.. Its actually an original console just wrapped in CF, so actually it adds a little weight. Oh wait, I took out the lighter and ash-tray, so maybe its a touch lighter, but really I was going for the aesthetics of it anyway.

I got it in the Mill Centre in Clondalkin. It's around 26 for a sheet of 480*600mm. brand is Pilot.

The best stuff to get is made by Folia Tec, but avoid any film with a metallic or aluminium finish as it won't strech enough to fit the contours of the centre console.

haha don't get me started on Halfords, only go in there if im really stuck or to make a wish list which i later purchase online:D, i much prefare to go to a good motor factors where they are likely to know what your talking about, i just can never see why people actually give them business, i supose they don't have much competition.

My friend who has a teg has the name of a nice Japanese shop he purchases from and gets the stuff much cheaper, ill find out the name and pass it on.

Speaking of CF, if anyone knows anywhere to get a gallon of resin let me know, been looking in places for a while and all I can really find is the little tubes of the stuff. Next attempt is to look in a marine suppliers shop, use it for making canoes and stuff so they might have it.

I got mine from a marine place in Dublin, I'll try and get the number again and pass it on. Very helpful guy there too. There are loads of types of resin, and he'll make sure its the right one for what you want.

Nice one Tom cheers. Did you need to apply a laquer to it too to stop the sun from turning the resin a yellow colour? Or is the amount small enough to prevent that?

I use lacquer, gives a nicer finish, but you can get some high quality resin that won't yellow, but unless you're gonna be doing a large area, a can of good clear lacquer is prob better value. Easier on curved surfaces too cos it won't run.
If you are only looking for the resin, this crowd are in cork and might be able to help you out.
I think this is the company I got stuff from in Dublin. The website has changed, so I can't be sure. But worth a call, and if it is right, the fella there is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Thats perfect Tom!! Looked at their site their, seems to be exactly what I need and only a few miles away too. I think I'll use the laquer as a final coat just to give a sheen to it anyway as well, but for starting that will def keep me going. Nice one!
