Vegas Baby!!!

I'm off to Las Vegas in October for 5 nights and then NewYork for 4 nights. Staying at Treasure Island Hotel with the deluxe strip view room in vegas and a suite in Fitzpatricks of Manhattan

Myself and best mate are going along and have never been. In Vegas, aside from some poker, the plan is to do the helicopter trip over the canyon and maybe rent a mustang for a day (maybe a Camaro, as someone else suggested) and hit the desert roads for a few hours. Dune buggies are also on the menu as well as that crazy circus show, but i'm not sure what else tbh.

NY...well, maybe ellis island and empire state building. Ground Zero. Broadway. My friend, for reasons I can't comprehend, wants to visit the Bronx...specifically The Projects. I told him I would be there in spirit  Some shopping in NY on the last day is also on the cards and a trip to the rocky steps in Phily.

Aside from the above, i'm not really sure what to be doing. Anyone been? It's booked and i'm already excited.

In NY, walk the Highline, you get a different perspective from the usual attractions and its off the tourist trail. Get on at 14th and 9th and get off at Chelsea for a bite to eat. The view from the top of the Rockefeller Center is better than the Empire State, worth a visit.

Vegas in October - nice. Bring the swimmers.
Big Shot in the Stratosphere and New York / New York Roller Coaster would be my must-do items if I was there again.

Cheers CJ. That Highline looks great! It's a definite yes from me and good photo ops there too. Someone mentioned Rockefeller already, so I will look into that too.

I planned on bringing along the speedos just in case anyway Kace...thanks for the heads up. I haven't checked avergae temperatures in the cities yet, but i'm guessing warm to hot in vegas and chiily to icy in NY. I'd bring the Quicksilver ski jacket; It's Irish green and white (without the orange/gold), but it's a bit bulky tbh.

I'm really looking forward to this trip. First and last time I was stateside was Orlando, Florida back in 1998/99 I think. Bring on Dennys!!!

Vegas:

You can rent Ferraris and supercars fairly cheap for a few hours on the strip. You'll see them parked up on the sidewalk.
Treasure Island do a great live show most nights at the front of the hotel.
MGM have lions in their lobby during the day, free to visit. If you like animals visit Siegfried and Roys zoo and aquatic centre.
Watch the Bellagio fountains at night, amazing.
Circus Circus have an indoor theme park. Yes, it's indoor.
Deffo do the GC in a helicopter, don't be coerced into deals in hotels or sidewalk. We went into CVS (it's a big pharmacy) and inside the door there was a guy with a stand specializing in rides and we got it really cheap with him. We opted to hire a jeep ourselves (you wont be driving a mustang or the like to the GC!!) and drove to the Hoover Dam on the way to the deal we got here: http://www.heliusa.com/tours/grand-cany ... pe-by-car/

It was awesome. Proper cheesy C&W experience, met a she wolf that night outside my cabin :) I'll never forget it. Driving there was cool too. Don't do that overpriced glass walk thing over the Canyon, it's meant to be crap. And you can't take photos.

If you're not up for that they can pick you up from LV and drop you back via helicopter.

NYC:

Will be very cold.

You can't just walk into/anywhere near Ground Zero (I found out to my horror), there is a waiting list and you have to book tickets on line. I wouldn't go to Ellis Island unless you want to queue all day in the freezing cold. The Zephyr is FREE from the Docks and goes as close to the statue as you need and you also get a full tour FOC - they just ask for a donation if you like when departing.
There are little Asian box type things on the corners of every street in NYC - they look really dodgy like stuff is made of rats but they are really nice and hygienic and the lamb and rice is meant to be lovely. Really cheap and new yorkers live on the stuff.
Time Square at night is amazeballs. Visit Toys R Us, biggest toy store in the world.

Book your tickets online in advance for broadway (cheaper this way) we got the cheapest ones for the lion king and could see fine, try and get up near the back and an aisle seat - good view. You have to go down and collect your tickets that day at the box office. Then you bypass all the queue in the evening - simples :)

Go to the plane museum - it's on a big ship - it's awesome. http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/ Really recommend this.

Visit grand central station - so many movies will make sense.

Stay out of Macys and go across to Sephora nearby and get your missus some urban decay pallettes for cheap as a pressie. She'll love you for it.

Eat in Bubba Gump Shrimp Times Square at least once on a weekday (stay out of there on the w/e) and order this:
Bubba’s After the Storm
“Bucket of Boat Trash”
Flash fried Shrimp, Fish with Cajun Spices,
and steamed Canadian Lobster Claw.
Served with Fries. 1250 cals 21.29 EPIC

Dont go to central park at night, but try see some of it if you can. There will be alot of walking, you can get everything done if you prepare and have good time management skills :)

And breathe! You might want to print this out :) There are pics of both trips on my facew@nk if you want a look.

And do me a favour, make sure your visa number is working and finding you on the system before you head to the airport. :|

Vegas wont be hot in October- only warmish- we were only there in Oct 2012 and stayed in the Venetian.

Be careful which helicopter ride you get at some only fly you to the Canyon and not over it. The Skywalk is rubbish and way over priced. You see the same standing on the edge!
We went to Cirque Du Soleil -O at the Bellagio- Best money we spent over there- amazing.
also went to the Hoover Dam with a comedy on deck tour and that was pretty cool- not expensive and well worth it.
went to the mob museum, titanic experience and the bodies show- all were a little commerical but grand. also went to Jubilee- which was the longest 2 hours of our lives- death by boredom!
trip to the Vegas sign and top of stratosphere- Bungee optional!
All the casinos are a must- some are more impressive than others.
Shooting range is a must too!
had booked 'the thunder from downunder' but my bridesmaid didnt make it due to hurricane Sandy and I dont think MJ was too keen on going with me so I cant vouch for that!!
Treasure Island was across from us and is a nice place.

Also- things look really close and they are actually miles away (you'll learn pretty quickly)

As for NY- havent been there in 4yrs so cant remember much! Vegas was great- had a ball!
I married one of the mods over there- Dragonheart aka MJ- so if u want advice on weddings over there- im deffo ur gal :smt002

Everyone's got everything I can think of covered. I went in October too and it was ~ 30 degrees everyday. There's an Atomic Testing museum there also that's worth a look.

If you're thinking about renting a car then you can also do a few laps of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It's a bit expensive for what you get though :(

The best thing about Vegas was getting to fire handguns and automatic rifles on a range. It's epic! :D

Damn - I've been there a good few times and never thought of doing that. Sounds cool alright. Probably never get to go there again for a long time now that I have a pesky family ;-)
