Rear Manifold...Issues

Postby Dilogoat86 » Thu Dec 03, 2009 12:18 am

So, I put the car up on a ramp tonight and had a listen to the "blow" and it's not coming from the rear downpipe to manifold gasket like I suspected...instead it appears to be coming from the rear manifold right up at the block. Has anyone had the opportunity to change a rear manifold gasket at all recently? Is this common? Should I be weary of anything in particular?

I tightened the downpipe nuts again with an impact drill and it didn't change the tone of the blow so should I be right in assuming that it's definitely not coming from there?

AH!!! Annoying. Also discovered I need new wheels too.

Are there any other options to the OEM exhaust manifold gaskets? Bloody £39 + Del for the pair and I may possibly only need one?

Haven't heard of this gasket going before..

Would it be worth your while to disassemble and check if it's a case if it not being in the correct position somehow?

What's wrong with your wheels?

that gasket is metal and layered, can't see it being the problem.

The two front wheels are buckled. One VERY badly, the only is only slightly lipped.

I'm going to have to take of the downpipe completely to see what's going on. I only had a half hour last night to have a look and I did a :(

It seems odd to me but considering the engine came from a breakers yard they could've stolen a manifold bolt or something. Either way, I'm not going to get a clear picture until I do a full inspection.

I'm blaming the wheels on bloody Meath roads, how I loath them. Probably the same event that caused that brand new tyre wall to get bubbled.

Yeah it's crap an all, but wheels are wheels, easy to replace. I'm thinking some multi spoke light silver or may be some enkies. Personally I think alloys are ridiculously difficult to pick unless you can see them on the car. The colour it is, white and silver are the only options too.

Ah no... black all the way!

check out the rotarims.com website.. nice rims there..

If you get 2nd handers getting them sprayed is always an option - I'm popping over to the place thomas gets his parts sprayed and fitted later today to get a quote for respraying my 4 enkeis.. I like them, but they have to be black..

Like yer man mick jagger said... in fact the original opening lyric to that song was "I See a silver alloy wheel, I want it to turn black".. or something close to that anyways.

well if you're gonna have white rims on a green car you have to have orange center caps and dust caps.. and a massive Irish flag in the rear window..

that's all I'm saying :-)

How's that gasket?

There's the 5*114 White one 2nd from the bottom on the right. That and another similar version with less spokes. I like that look. May go into a deep silver also. Decisions decisions.

Dilogoat, suggest you get Photochopping on the wheel choice, you don't want to be spending a grand on something and then realise it doesn't suit. Personally;y, I'd thread carefully before putting white wheels on a car, they suit some colours but not all. Any pics of your car knocking about?

FWIW, I'm a big fan of the Rota Torques in bronze.

Agreed CJ, white looks awful on a lot of cars, but they're a requirement on this car imo.

You can't really make out the paint colour in that shot so its hard to judge, looks black?

Subjectively speaking, I'm not a white wheel man myself. From my perspective, they look fine on white cars but tend to detract too much from the overall presence in other cases. When a non-white car with white wheels comes into my field of view, I immediately see white wheels first and the car second. For me, the wheels need to blend into and compliment the overall design rather than jumping off the canvas before you've had time to survey the entire car.

Its all boils down to taste and preference really.

It really does. The white is only really a choice because it currently has white wheels. I wouldn't ever have chosen that myself however I was nicely surprised when I saw the car first. I'd be more inclined to go for gun metal grey, steel grey, silver, dull silver finished wheels on a car that dark.

Now I'm thinking matt balck on EVERYTHING. Passing phase though.

Wheels finished in gunmetal grey, flash chrome and bronze are quite current and look the part in my opinion - understated bling if you will.

Whatever you decide I've just gotten quoted 50-60 euro per wheel to get them sandblasted and painted.

for what it's worth I had gun metal rims whith a polished lip before, and while I liked it I know there were non-fans amongst the general mob... but then..it's your car..do it your way..

€240 for painted or €280 for powder coated... I just presumed powder coating was the way to go tbh, is there much of a difference? (sorry for the thread hyjack)

Powder coating is a much harder finish and covers more of the alloy when its being applied because its electrically charged and the paint is attracted to the metal instead of ordinary spray paint. Plus the powder coating is baked in an oven to cure after the application also.

Crucially... I literally just drop the car in a pick it up afterwards.. that's also a factor to be considered...
