GR brake upgrade

Postby chuck » Fri Oct 28, 2005 9:08 pm

Hi peeps,
Last week I ordered GPX brake calipers discs and pads from a breaking fto on ebay, what i would like to know is do i need anything else or is it a straight swap.......

apart from red smoothright to paint them with that is :) braided lines would be good but spent too much lately leave that till another day or couple of months more like,

Have also took Jay up on his one week sale and bought a new DC blended front bumper and some DC side skirts and face lift light pods all posted to Scotland so will have to wait a while before i get my hands on them..can't wait.... will I be needing anything extra to fit these..
Have a good long weekend everyone

I've put the GPX front brake calipers on my GR too, one of my earlier mods.

They pretty much bolt off bolt on, so should be fairly straight forward hopefully. The disc is only held on by the calipers and the wheel itself so no problems there.

I replaced my brake fluid at the same time, went for Dot 5.1. Even if you don't go for an upgrade of your brake fluid make sure you have plenty of whatever you do have in there for when you're bleeding the system.

Oh ya, worth mentioning, don't mix the different grades of brake fluid, apparently it can rot the seals if you do. If you're not sure what you have in there just replace the lot.

Thanks for that Kevinod only recently changed brake fluid couple of months ago used Dot 4 is it worth my while going for Dot 5 as I still have a litre or so of 4 in the shed, hopefully the upgrade will make a difference as i felt brakes were a bit weak

They're a bit better alright, particularly at higher speeds, better bite then. I was bedding in new pads at the time so didn't have a straight before/after to compare.

I think the braided hoses make a bit of a difference too so do those whenever you can.

dot 4 vs 5, I dunno, 4 is probably fine, especially when its fresh. I had no idea what was in mine, 3 or 4, and just went for 5.1.

I really couldn't see that being a good idea... there isn't much in the size difference, but you're not going to be getting contact on all of the pad on the disc, so you're not going to be getting all the braking power either.

If there isn't too much mileage on those drilled/grooved discs you might be able to get a few quid for them, or alternatively put them on your rear brakes?

i've fitted brembos just over the weekend!!

a smidge bigger than the GR, i think the GR/GS's brakes are the same, around 256MM, i've got 330MM in there now, only problem is that the brake guards are the rear are rubbing slightly so it may be time to take the grinder out!

haven't really tested them out, but they need bedding in!

well i had to change the brake master cylinder, my one wasn't up to the job but they seem pretty good! they actually make the steering a little heavier cos they weight so much!
but they do look sweet!
