Any DIY ideas for Cold air intake?

Postby CByrne » Fri Jun 24, 2005 5:52 pm

Has anyone done a DIY job on a cold air intake to go with an aftermarket filter?
Have got the ITG, and have noticed unbelievable gains. :D
Before you shoot me down, I think the biggest reason for the gains is that the standard filter was in such poor shape when I took it out. Bits of leaves, dirt, an awful lot of crap in there.

One thing I possibly should have done is left the bottom of the air box in there?
Anyway if anyone has done some DIY piping, from the standard air intake point, from below or going thru the bumper, I might give it a go aswell.
The filter gets awful hot, defeats the purpose taking in engine air really.....

Thanks
Colm

Several owners in england have tried thia but they now just shield the filter from the heat instead, as they were worried about water from and heavy road flood getting into the pipeand making its way into the filter/engine, so if your going to do it be careful.

Colm, heres what I did:

1. Removed the original air ducting from the front bumper
2. Removed the airbox
3. Got a metre of 4" flexible aluminium conduit, cable tied it in place at the front grill and at the old entry hole to the airbox (you can the tubing in this pic, bumper was off at the time).
4. Used silicone adhesive to secure a 45 degree 3" Wavin bend onto the old airbox hole to direct incoming air towards the filter.
5. Used a section of heat wrapped 9" Wavin pipe as a head shield, its screwed in place above the Tip box.

The ITG gets much more dustier that it did without the intake so it appears that plenty of air is being fed into the engine bay from the outside. I can't say I noticed any serious gains but the fact that cold oxygen rich air is getting in at the filter has got to be a good thing.
