Taking the Plunge!!

Postby padidas » Fri Feb 15, 2008 3:32 am

hi guys,

was considering getting an fto for a while now, and finally decided to sell my own (starting next week) and take the plunge....

BIG problem is that im budgeting myself to in and around 3,500euro, shockingly enough! i've found two potential cars i'm going to be looking at in the next couple of weeks. just wandering if anyone has seen these two before??

http://cars.buyandsell.ie/vehicles/view ... c-gpx-1995

http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cf ... rID=860780

PS any tips on what I should specifically look out for on a 95 MiVec?

thanks lads.

pad.

Both of those cars look like exceptional value. However thread carefully buying an FTO for 3k. Check out the buying guide on the main page of this site.

Well the owner of the red one went to alot of bother to take the pic's makes it look really well, but also make's you wonder are they desperate to sell, maybe they took load's of really nice pic's to get rid of it quick! :smt017
Where as the first one doesn't look as cared for? but at that price I recon at least you know what you see is what you get and it will need some tender loving care! :smt049
Considering I bought an FTO of the same year just five months ago for €5750.00 & it cost me nearly half of that so far to bring it up to scratch, have FTO's really dropped that much in value in less than six months!

I dono maybe I'm still bitter! Trust noone! BUYER BEWARE!!! You don't want to end up as bitter and twisted as me!
When you're good, you're good....... but when you're great you're ME

Nah, they dropped a bit a while back when there was a ton of them for sale, but the cbg isnt heavy on FTO's at the moment.

Padidas, add an extra 3k and you can buy mine :)

A good maintanence schedule would be top of my list. If you scrimp on the price, chances are you'll end up paying a premium in terms of future maintanance. I wouldn't be too worried about cosmetics - thay can be easily fixed, if the engine, gearbox and suspension havn't been properly looked after, you may need to budget a whole lot more to put things right. I'm always suspicious of cheap cars - aside from the fact that the seller might want a quick sale, there could be other things lurking under the surface.

If you have no way to stretch your budget, get a mechanic, the AA or someone who knows FTOs to check that car out first - make this a priority.

Postby padidas » Fri Feb 15, 2008 8:05 pm

Thanks a lot lads (and Marie),

Yeah i've got a mechanic friend of mine coming out with me to have a look at the two cars, i've been keeping a keen eye out for these two cars, and both have been on the market for at least a month!

that kinda made some alarm bells ring, although the red fto, was for sale for 3,500 about two weeks ago and has dropped to 3 since.

My mate is also a private car dealer and says that the one possible reason for these scarily low prices is that FTO's as a whole take forever to sell, and that the red one (due to having an NCT till 09) would be a much more promising one to look into properly...

Thanks for all the advice people!
Really appreciate it.

Hope to be the one giving advice to someone else soon enough.

Nah dont think it's for me.. I'm pretty dead set on a manual, and the fact is I have No idea how much it would cost to get the car mechanically back up to scratch....

to be honest it's all or nothing.. i'd go mental knowing I "could" have the MiVec, so thats pretty much the plan, it was the same when I was looking for an MR2, the non-turbo just wouldnt be "good" enough for me... lol

That said,

The most important part for me is just having a manual. :)

You are going to have trouble finding a clean Mivec Manual for a budget of 3.5K

For that budget I'd be very happy to find a clean manual GR.

TBH I'd be surprised if there wasn't a fair bit of maintance to be done on a 3.5K FTO - most are very tired looking at this price. A couple of grand increase in your budget would do a lot for the standard of FTO you will be looking at.

I agree totally here, I have a lot of guys ring me looking to sell theyre so called PERFECT FTO for 3K and under. When I ask for pics or go and see them you can tell straight away it is going to cost a lot more in the long run.
Something that seems too good to be true usually is!!
There is nothing worse than buying something on a low budget, then you have a nice long drive home only to hear all the knocks and bangs, all the while counting up what is going to cost you.

Wonder what this one is like

Yikes!

Postby padidas » Tue Feb 19, 2008 6:35 pm

Firstly - thanks a lot lads! Really appreciate the help.... This site is MORE than helpful in pretty much every way. ;)

just looking at the last one that was posted, and wandering is there going to be a HUGE difference in performance beween the GR and the MiVec?

It really does take a lot to impress me, as a lot of my mates (old enough to get insured) have had Evo's and other turbo charged madness....

thanks again,
