i have had battery tested reads 95% car has a draw as when left connected to battery overnight it dies but if not connected is fine whitch rules out alternator and battery i would susspect the alternator has been changed twice too

hi im new im tom mentioned this in my newb post but would really like your help. let me start from the beginning i bought this fto of a guy who by looks of it abused her not so much high end driving but he did the repaire himself and cut costs i bought a mivec witch to my belive had a gr engine and a gr auto engine loom on a manual box this was the first issue i noticed. he told me it had majour running issues as it would not run without the maf unplugged so he asumed it was that sensor that had gone also the rev counter did not work or the reverse light my knowledge on cars tells me throw wrong loom things r not going to behave. so i changed the maf no luck with a bit playing and research the rpm is located in to the ifs sensor by the water housing so changed this and the car picked up life went from 5 mpg to bout 35 mpg i was much chuffed lol. any way once this was done i decided to treat her to her rightful loom and ecu from a manual gr 1996 witch let me tell u is not east to find as i have not seen many manual gr. when this was done everything worked fine. in this progress i fitted cd player amp sub the normal. and still no flat battery. a few weeks later dead battery i assumed because when i changed the loom i never put the alternator plug in so thought this was due to restricted charge. so put the correct 2 pin alternator in and same as before but charge few days later dead battery same every morning had battery checked witch was the small micra battery and it was bad so changed it still same problem then alternator went assumed it was this so changed the alternator again and all went back to normal. but im still getting the dead battery every morning so i decided every night to disconnect and now its fine but cant keep doing this. the weird thing is when i took bad alternator back he checked it and said it was fine nothing wrong with it but as new guy got refund. dont no if any this info will help as it is really puzzling me the only other info i can give to is i left the battery to die and there was a little life and a weird buzzing noise from brake switch any help much apriciated

Quick question..probably a silly one..

Does the battery light in the dash ever come on..even dim or flickering?

Quickest way to test the alternator is to start the car, and the disconnet the negative terminal..

if the car stays running alt is fino... if it doesnt something needs checking over.

sounds more like something is draining the battery. make sure the boot light or glovebox light isn't staying on, disconnect the radio and anything like a phone kit and if possible switch the alarm off at the box.

I'm sort of confused over this bit. You saying that its got Mi-Vec? Cause if it does its a GPX. Or you saying that you were told it had Mi-Vec but now you know it doesnt?

For the battery, like Colm said it does sounnd like something is draining it, the battery is small enough anyway and I find that if I leave my lights even on a for a very short amount of time without the engine on the battery goes dead extremely fast!

hi guys well my boot light is not connect and as for glove box never new i had a light lmao. the alternator i will check tomorrow as for the light it used to come on when i had the faulty alternator but since change does not stereo face plate get taken off. and what i meant my mivec the car was originally a manual gpx mivec but now got the gr lump in don't no y but that what she got. someone mentioned alarm that very interesting and might help i had to change my siren a few weeks back before all this was happening and central locking and indicators stopped. i don't no a lot about alarms so looked at brain and played with some switches in the brain i do believe there was 4 or 5 if one these was left in wrong place could this effect something like this. in the end found the problem there was 2 fuse blown near the ignition barrel now i no i was wrong in doing this but i changed them to 20a not 10 as this was all i had at time and needed them changing due to where i lived and i have never got round to putting 10a back in this problem is really bugging me and im so tempted to put battery on switch but i no a fix would be better thanks for help so far also alarm is a gt series apparently quite common.

just a little update last night i decided to change all fuse oppon doiing this the only one that sparked was the room lamp fuse witch by the symptons and general car wiring operates the clock interiar light and cd player so i think i start from the biggest cause and hard wire the cd player this way i can disconect this when i want to see if this is the source. i tried the alternator and all is good. my m8 said it could sparked because it was on constant live but if this was true why did it not do it for lights as this is constant it even sparked when doors were shut no key in car. i checked the reading after and got 12.59 with fuse out when fuse went in drop to 12.54 55 went back to 12.59 58 but the fall was a lot quicker just did not seem right with fuse in so its now been removed for testing.

Fluctuations of a few mV isn't going to be significant on a battery. You'd want to be seeing a drop of a few volts to draw any conclusions from this.

sorry guys last update was me going mad lol but have come across some good news but we eill see in morning can any one tell me on here what the engine relay is for and the fise mpi thanks

Relays are electronic switches. For example, when you turn on your indicators, a relay that is on an on/off impulse is triggered causing the light to flash.
