Toolbox Essentials

Postby The Bull » Fri Oct 20, 2006 11:50 am

Long story cut short,
Friday last, the FTO overheated, the top rad pipe had a nervous breakdown, so put up the bat-sign and CJ came out to meet me.
It being 9pm and the thoughts of given a recovery man 200 quid to lift the car ( Tip box ) we decided to do a patch job, we scrounged a couple of essentials from homeand and tried to limp her home, the following is completely true, cj will verify....
The essentials are as follows.

half a dozen cable ties
electrical tape
about 1000 coke bottles of water
and a role of cling film!

wrapped the pipe in cling film to make a seal, covered film in elec tape for support and re-afixed the pipe with the cable ties

Long story short, stopped a couple of times to repeat the process but got home, moral of the story.... 1000 euros worth of snap-on tools are no use with out the essentials... ( cigarettes are handy too )

Clingfilm - who would have thought it. It certainly gets my vote in the usefulness stakes. It got us 10 miles down the road which is pretty impressive for a roll of kitchen plastic.

Cable ties are brilliant and an essential part of any emergency kit. But where was your roll of Duck tape?

McGuyver would be ashamed of you.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, the duct tape may have been too thick, easier to get a tight bind with the lecky tape. McGuyver would have been ashamed of the lack of mullet hairdos, he couldnt fault the work tho. :)

Il let CJ comment on the dancing.

I found out on Saturday that a good friendly local mechanic is priceless... had the manifold replaced on my gti and as I was driving home the bottom hose from my turbo blew off and right in the middle of the village too..... car just ground to a halt - called u pthe mechanic and he came straight out with his trolley jack, lifted the car, replaced the hose and sent me on my way...... happy days :)

i was told by an old guy i used to work with, that you only need 2 tools in your tool box, a hammer and a roll of gaffer tape ! you use them this way,

"if it does'nt move, but it's supposed to, use the hammer!"

"if it moves, but it aint supposed to....... use the gaffer tape!"

I love that philosophy.. lol
