It sounds dangerous from what you've said, but it all depends on whether the area is structural or not, if they are not structuraal pocket sections. Having spent the last few days under my car, if feel somewhat qualfied to speek. Some areas look much worse that they are, and are only affected by surface rust.
But if you can put your finger through, chassis rails and or the floor, that is serious. We are hearing an increasing number of FTO with chassis gone beyond repair, especially the earlier stuff. I'd say prepare for the worst and get it looked at professionally.
