Just a quick one. Might be moving to Dubai in a few months, Ireland is p1ssing me off big time! Bad weather, high tax, expensive, so I said I'll go somewhere its hot, tax free, and cheap. (A 350Z costs E15,560 for example, though I'm contemplating bringing the FTO though I might leave her here for when I come on holidays.)
Anyone been there?

Friend of mine moved to Oman for a year. Neighbour of Dubai same idea. Hated every minute of it....They're grand for holidays etc but as for moving there.....you could do better I think.

If you have a gold-plated FTO over there you'll do just fine. Otherwise buy yourself a pair of Gucci loafers and a pair of cool shades and you're sorted.

Think of Puerto Banus x 20

Stay away, there are much better places you could go to.

Remember the huge culture shock too...

Like someone else said, grand for a holiday.

If I was to start a life anywhere - it would be in Australia. Been there several times now and its got super climate, fantasic beaches, easygoing lifestyle, nice people, generally much nicer roads and low road tax and insurance. Ideal country for an FTO (presuming you're not living in the outback).

Pubs are ok, checked it out. About 95% of the population is ex-pats so they are pretty much more leniant than other gulf states when it comes to middle east rules and stuff. Was thinking Oz but with Dubai the companies usually pay for a trip home once a year, and being in the construction industry a few years out there working on some of those buildings would put a major rating on a cv! I dont know, its a toughie cause I just got put in charge of a 70 million project and for a young fella like me that responsibility and chance doesnt come around too often! I was only told that today and if I hadnt I would def go. God the decisions are so bloody hard!!!

The 70mil contract you just took over here sounds very good dude. maybe do that project and get that on the CV. If you still feel like splitting after that, then so be it. :)

Looks like thats what I'm going to do. Far easier to get a good job over there with that under my belt. Plus the added 276km mileage a week will go down well!

The only time you cant really eat or drink anything is during ramadam, and its not illegal, just considered rude, most offices provide a room for non-muslims where they can eat or drink all right. I think people like to tell 'horror' stories, not saying their not true, but I've asked a few people now and they have amazing experiences of the place. One fella is going back there to live after spending a year here. Flat broke here but has a boat, a car, and a jeep in his parents drive over there. I suppose it depends on how some people adjust and how some want to be there yet dont want to change their ways too much. If I ever go on holidays I try to cram as much of the basic local language (please, thanks, hello, goodbye, that sort of stuff) into me cause I think its rude not to make an effort. It'll be the same when I go there, nothing worse than people coming into your city or country nad not trying, just thinking that you should be trying to accommodate them. No offence to any non-nationals here, but how many times has anyone here ever gone on about someone that got an order wrong in a pub or restaurant and said 'and sure they didnt have a word of bloody english!'.
