Flea,
When you say 'went' could you be more specific? You sure its not the linkage? Would seem like a plausable answer. With the gear lever tilted over to the right (forward for 5th gear, back for reverse gear) the selection of these two gears is likely to be actuated by the same linkage....
What happens when you try to selcet these gears? Does it grind or does it feel as if there is nothing there?
If it feels as if there nothing connected, then most likely the linkage. On the simplest level open the bonnet and get someone to try selecting these gears (you may need to remove the battery & tray to see) you should be able to see (and hear) the linkage moving as it enters the gear box. The other end of the linkage can be seen by simply removing the stereo and surround, when you shift the gears should see the linkage moving. Loose connection could be at gear box or gear lever end. If gear lever you'll need to remove the plastic centre console around gear lever -not that difficult.
