FTO's fuel tank

I've rechecked this thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4846&hilit=petrol+tank and my personal best was 64.17 L into the GR.


yesterday I had the misfortune of finding out that my warning light for low petrol doesnt work
Luckily enough I was just meters away from the Topaz garage . I've thrown a 2 littre bottle in it and then get this from the pump

Yes i could see the petrol in the pipes on the top , yer man at the till couldnt belive how huge the tank is on the car

I doubt you actually got that much petrol, it's more likely that the pump isn't calibrated correctly.
Whether that's deliberate or not is a different question...

I'd believe it. Actually have an empty FTO tank in the yard, if I were really bored I could see how much it'd take to fill it......

70l - that's definitely a record. I feel good when I break the 60 barrier. When mine hits empty on the gauge, there's generally another 10-15l in the tank at that stage and the needle then goes down way below empty before the warning light comes on (then off, then on, then off etc).

Actually I have never seen a definitive guide to how many times this comes on and off before it comes on constantly.

It'll vary depending on how fast you're going, how many hills you hit and how many bends you go around, the one on the Shogun is mental for radomly coming on

I would be very surprised if you could get 70litres into an FTO fuel tank.
I think that over-optimistic fuel pumps are relatively common place these days. I managed to put over 6 litres into a 5 litre plastic fuel can recently.

If I were you Seb - I'd go back with my 5 litre fuel can and see how much it takes.

I was kind of paranoid about this myself until I actually ran out of petrol yesterday and had to get a lift to the garage and pick up a jerry can.

€5 was 3.9 liters and the can was about 4/5ths full, so my suspicions have been put aside. That said, I always go to Topaz or Esso. Some of the smaller garages might be dodgy.

i put 68.6l in my car the last day, light came on on way home from college.... drove maybe 30miles to the garage and filled her to the neck.... the light wasnt fully on a the time so id say she wasnt dry!

After 667 kms on the irish roads this week was time for a refuel (not bad for the 70+ liters).Needle was pointing the first marked line of the dial (there where normally you should still have the reserve left ).

I've used the same pump and stopped at 54 L when the pumped stopped by itself.

Some of you might remember this story where I managed to get 72L into the fuel tank, the ensuing fuel leak had me concerned for a while...

I would of guessed there wouldn't be too much room after the 60L mark. I was on the fuel light for a while and then filled up to get 55.5L

I use E5 petrol, its a bio-fuel mix but it has an average octane of 99.2

current prices:

Octane 98 = NZ$1.92 (euro 0.98c)
Octane 95 = NZ$1.85 (euro 0.95c)
Ocatne 91 = NZ$1.77 (euro 0.91c)

91 is like pumping water and turds into your fuel tank.

Had my first fill > €70 the other day -not nice. That was only 54.25 litres though, I always chicken out well in advance of the fuel light coming on.
Have been filling it to the brim (such a pain and so time consuming with the FTO's filler neck design)for the last few times in an effort to establish the fuel consumption. First results are 23.77 and 27.5mpg. Have not been shy about getting the mivec out either. I know it's been discussed before, but what sort of real world mpg are people getting? And I don't want to hear about the time you drove Miss Daisy on a down hill stretch of smooth motorway at 50mph with a tail wind; real world please.

28mpg average. (bad week would be 27 good week would be 29)

I mostly do motorway driving at 100kph in 5th. I would say 75% of my driving is this style.

About 19 - 20MPG, mostly around town, not much in the way of motorway driving.

I know it geeky but I've been keeping track of my MPG & petrol prices since early 2008, graphs and all.
Average MPG was:
2008 27.95
2009 28.68
and so far this year 29.05.

I'm assume the car has remained the same, so is it old age or the recession that's altering your driving style in favour of improved economy

I simply wouldn't have the patience to fill teh car to the brim every time -it's just so time consuming on the FTO

The 23.77 figure I had was the result of plenty of mivec action, the 27.5 was mostly long distance. If I settled into sensible commuter mode (boring) I'm sure 30+mpg would be achievable...
