Wanted: GPX engine!

Postby Wildhound » Mon Oct 22, 2007 1:11 pm

Basically what started as a strange rattle turned out to be the small end of one of my pistons. I was told it could cost about €2500 to have the engine stripped down and machined etc. and that it would be cheaper to have the engine replaced.

I'm going to ring IVI now to see if they can help, but if anyone has a good condition GPX engine or knows where I can find one please let me know!

Edit: IVI don't have one. They said they're hard to come by and they'll keep and eye out but I wouldn't hold my breath...

Man thats bad news. You could always try ebay. I saw a few engines for sale there between 500-700£. Add shipping to that but it will still be cheaper than 2500 I guess.
Good luck.

Edit: There is one for sale here
You just have to arrange shipping with the seller. He seems to have good feedback and according to the listing he'll post worldwide

Unfortunately I can't quite afford that. :( My current plan is to think positive about it and turn it into a project since I plan to hang onto the car for a while.

I'm going to buy an engine, drop it in, strip down my one and rebuild it completely (perhaps with some fancy cromed bits and bobs!) and then swap it back again, selling the second engine on again!

This will still be expensive, but I can do it over time and I'll save a fortune on labour, still have the car in the mean time, and I'll actually enjoy it.

I've found two engines so far. It's just a matter of getting the money together before my one totally gives up!

Ok so I'll be ordering an engine sometime this week and while I've a couple of options, this one is looking most appealing.

Has anyone ever dealt with these guys? Their feedback seems very positive and what they're offering is fantastic. Guaranteed less than 30k miles on the engine, totally rebuilt... almost sounds too good to be true.

The only problem I can see is that shipping might be expensive. If so I might have to go for an option closer to home.

The only problem I see is that they want your old engine, as part of the deal. So that wouldn't help with you plan of running the new one and rebuilding the old one.
But if it's only 30k on her then why bother with the rebuild!
Lots to think about, nothing to worry about!

If they do all that work how come they are selling the engine so cheap.

BIG END, MAIN BEARINGS AND HEADGASKETS ARE THOROUGHLY CHECKED AND REPLACED WHERE NECESSARY

FULLY TESTED WITH COMPRESSION AND OIL TESTING

If they open the engines then the Head gaskets have to be replaced every time.
I find it hard to believe that they would go to that much trouble selling second hand engine.

Never read the small print. So if you buy from them you leave feedback and then you have a problem no way to show your dissatisfaction with your purchase.

Doubt very much if they could get their hands on so many engines under 30Km's.
An engine on ebay from one of the normal UK breakers would be a better option in my opinion. They would not take a chance with the effect a problem would have on repeat business from owners

Hmmm, cheers for the replies guys.

I had assumed I could just pay some sort of surcharge and not have to give them my engine in exchange. I was going to ask them about that, but that positive feedback scam would certainly put me off. Big time.

Back the the drawing board!

Ah man - that really sucks!

I've been in this pickle myself in the past - back then SteelRoe was able to sort me out (Thanks Steelroe!! - she's still purring!)

You should try giving Paul a call (I think his number is in the services section) he might well be able & willing to help.

I paid something like 2k for a replacement engine and fitting (this includes belts and other such niggly bits!)

If nothing else it's worthwhile hearing pauls thoughts on the matter.

you could always take this opportunity to have a vr4 unit dropped in?!

Hehe, Steelroe has one and I'm considering it, but there's drawbacks to all of my options at the moment so I'll have to weigh it up! Won't have the money for a few more days so I've time to think.

I flirted with the thought of a VR4 but of course that's hardly going to be cheap since I assume there's a good few other changes would have to be made.

I was actually thinking the exact same thing this afternoon!

I wonder how much that'd cost?
