LSD

Hey folks,

Finally got my baby last week and am delighted with everything bar one....

Apparently it has LSD witch is responsible for some strange handling at low speeds or when accelerating around a corner. This I have got used to and is now fine, however when starting off at low revs with lock on, a "clunk" or multiple "clunks" can be heard from the front end.
When "driven on" there is no sign of this and the car handles perfectly (loves wet roundabouts! :D)
I have had the car to a garage and we have inspected it for all loose joints bushings cv etc etc.. is all fine.
The model is a 97 GPX and does not usually have LSD as standard although it is an option!

Does anyone know if these Helical LSD's are usually noisy?
Maybe someone who drives a GPVR ? (LSD as Standard)

Cheers.

They can get noisy when worn. I assume its a manual we're talking about here, if you havn't changed the gearbox oil, give it a go and see if it makes any difference.

75W-85 or 75W-90 GL4 gear oil should do the trick in the manual box.

Hi,
Ok so I changed the gearbox oil and it made no difference.
I dont know if im imagining it but I think the noise is becoming more pronounced, maybe Im just getting better at recreating it?

Anyway got on to the garage I bought it off and told them that I was going to park it for fear of somthing breaking and they can take it back and fix it......

It went from there to "Mr Gearbox" in dublin. (anybody have a no for this man). He said that the noise was normal and that I would be mad to change to the standard Diff.. as the one that is in it is worth 3.5K. so the garage is washing their hands of it!
What to do??? :x
Does anybody know how noisy these Diffs should be? :?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, Thanks,

Have you reached the end of your guarentee period? If not them bring the car back to them and demand a refund.

Why do these supposed 'specialiast' outlets normally talk crap when it comes to their area of expertise? The LSD is part of the gearbox - even a new box won't cost you 3 and a half grand ffs!

My two cents worth (assuming that the gearbox / LSD is at fault) - the internals of the box are damaged in some way - this noise won't go away, the box will give up the ghost at some stage. At this point, the easist and cheapest thing to do would be to source a second hand LSD equiped box, you may have to get one from the UK. If the latter is true, you could end up spending at 1k euro for this option (inc fitting), possibly more.

PM Russman - he has a GPvR, he'll be able to comment on the noise. While you should expect occasional noise from an LSD on cornering, it shouldn't be that prominent.

afaik LSD has a clutching system which limits the slip during corning, so surely this so called specialist should have checked the clutching system for wear which could have caused this excessive noise :?:

Yeah I am aware of how this thing works, but he is saying that I could go up there and drive 3 other cars that make equally as much noise in similar circumstances, where apparently he has put in these Diffs for people.
I find this difficult to believe and am to far away from dublin to checkout his claim... apparently it is not the normal standard LSD that comes with the VR???
