Scraping noise from the front

Another one (sorry)

I have a strange noise that occurred about 2 weeks ago, which I originally thought was coming from the drivers side rear, however, I now believe it to be coming from the drivers side front.

It sounds as if something is scouring the disc - it is very high pitched, almost like a stone is caught between the disc and it is very intermittent, will come and go and the noise and length of the noise will vary, sometimes it goes really loud and constant for about 20 seconds, other times it will be dull and do it for a couple of seconds, then go away for a couple of seconds, then come back, then it will be fine for 10 minutes. It almost feels like something is binding on and then it stops.

The car has not been hit, no kerbs etc - the noise just appeared one day.

Could thin brake pads do this, or would the noise be constant?

I get this too, i have recently put new discs and pads on and the noise is still there so i wouldnt of thougth its the brakes or pads (on mine anyway). I think its coming from the front left on my car. At the garage the bloke said i need front anti roll bar drop links / bushes so it could be this, the sound of metal on metal, scraping against each other because the bushes need replacing? it might be the same problem as you, can anyone confirm that this would happen?

Just get your brake pads and wheel bearings checked. Its likely to be one of these.

Thanks guys for the help!

MR. FTO GR - sounds like the same symptoms as mine from what you have described.

I am going to get the pads and discs checked on Friday - as I think these need changing desperately, but the noise does seem to go really loud when I first pull away and get to about 2,000 rpm - 2.5k rpm after leaving the car for a few hours. Possibly something to do with the calliper maybe??

Another posibility is a siezed caliper, if you have the facility to stick the car up on stands, pull the brake and caliper assembley apart, regrease / copper grease as appropriate. Failing that, pay your local friendly mechanic a visit.

Mine has also started this in the last couple of months and its getting progresively worse... I know the rear driverside wheel bearing is on the way out! :?
I dont suppose its worth putting a second hand bearing/hub in there. Should I just go and get one of these!

misterbishi - mine is also getting worse day by day (louder). I am popping to the garage tomorrow afternoon for them to have a look - I suspect as well as the pads and discs need doing, it is also the front wheel bearing - that news/confirmation I am not looking forward to!!!

I shall let you know the prognosis tomorrow evening!

Does anyone know how many labour hours I would be looking at and also a rough price of the wheel bearing for the front? also can they be re-greased on the FTO's if the bearing itself hasn't gone?

Strangely enough the front wheel bearings are half the price of the rear due to being able to buy just the bearing and not the entire hub as in the rear's case!

As for labour costs I dont know I would imagine that the front would be more involved than the rear but neither should take much time to a competent mechanic!
I will be changing my rear bearing soon so Ill have a better idea then

Some of the guys on here would have more experience!!

What I do know is that camskill are very good to deal with and have a good range of fast moving parts :wink:

Think I've just encountered the same problem this morning, seems to occur just after pulling off for about 30 seconds then goes, sounds at first like metal on metal, then sounds a bit like air escaping from a hose or something, but goes away then until next time I start up and drive off.

check your brake discs - you could have trapped a wee stone in one of the "vents".. happened frequently on the golf..very very annoying.

Good idea. For the moment I find the best solution is to turn up the cd player.
