fto buying

Postby marc garrett » Tue Feb 08, 2005 7:49 pm

hey up all.got into ftos from a mate who bought one.ever since i have always wanted one.im in the position to buy one at the mo and there is a few out there.fto s are a great machine that there is no doubt and looks of the motor blow me away.what i would like your valued opions on is as follows...

most people buy a car the date worries them alot due to the nct and the engine wear and tear etc over the years.most ftos ive seen are between 1995 and 1998.(my price range)thats still old enough but im of the opinion that the fto is in a different league and most owners look after the cars inside, outside and underneath.alot of people say its the years to old and for what ya pay for a 1997 etc you can get a newer car.does this matter that much in this type of car the age factor and does the car hold its value better than  "ordinary" cars.

thanking ya all in advance for your opinion and thoughts

Hey Marc,

check out CJ's buying guide if you haven't already, on the fto-ireland home page.

FTOs were made between 94 and 2000 I think. Coming from Japan, they tend to have very low mileage, my 95 which arrived last August had about 50k miles on it, for 9 1/2 years old it's nothing. Also, having spent most of their lives in Japan where the roads + weather etc. must be much better than Irish roads + weather, they're generally going to be in better condition than 9/10 year old Irish cars. That and the Jap NCT is very strict. As you say, for this type of car they'll tend to be looked after better than the average car too.

So, agewise, I don't think you have anything to worry about. The one thing to note, is there was a facelift in 97, which on the outside meant a different front bumper. You'll pay up to twice the cost of a 95 on a 97 model as a result, so check out both models to see if you think its worth that.

I've had people amazed at how little the FTO cost me, 95 or not, and I can't claim to have got mine cheap. For the money you get a whole lot of handling, performance, and looks. It's a personal thing, but for me there's very few cars older or newer that look as good as the FTO!

Anyway, my 2c, hope that helps ya,
Kev.

Hi Marc

The majority of FTOs I come across are in good condition for their age, and they do age well. Theres too much snobbery in this country as regards the year of the car you drive, personally, I don't subscribe to this. I'm driving an 11 year old FTO that looks and goes a whole let better than any 04 motor you care to name for under 25 grand, I am kinda biased though ;)

I assume from Daves comment that you know him (either that or he's being a bit cheeky ;)), if you're after an FTO, I'm sure the man can help you out if you're looking at motors.

yup unfortunately Marc is a good mate of mine, stuck out in Africa!! yeah i'll be helping him do some shopping alright, but it's always good to get other peoples opinions. It all really depends on what the insurance will afford him.

I can certianly subscribe to this - I am presently looking for a new car for the missus (budget circa 25-30K) and have test drove several cars over the past week from a 2.0 litre Alfa 147 to a Mini Cooper and I still look forward to getting back into my FTO after the test drives - they really don't compare looks or performance wise to my car - its not helping her buying decisions either when she also prefers getting back into the FTO.

Yeah - but a couple of issues here - first off - it should preferably be a new car (company car) and secondly I'm not about to go down the road of looking after a 2nd FTO - my own one has taken up enough of my time and money. A new warm/hot hatch (Alfa 147/MINI Cooper S) will be much less hassle to run. One project is enough for me - The 98 1.8 MX5 is now for sale - lovely car - but like the FTO it needs constant love & attention. I like the idea of a warranty and being able to throw the car back at the garage if anything goes wrong.

I will probably be upgrading my own car though - but I'll have to find a low mile 99/00 FTO GPX with a few choice bits first.
