Thats a pretty high viscosity oil to be using on a high revving V6 engine, 5-10W would be more like it.

I'll definitely keep that in mind. Once I get the car running i'll do an oil change and try magnatec or something similar.

Shell Helix Ultra 5W - 40 - fully synth - good readily available high performance oil. Have never used any other oil in my FTO.

just a quck note....... RSG, as a quick rule of thumb................ the higher the ambient temperature the higher the second number especially, you might want to lower the first number to 10w or 15w you could even go for a 60 on the second number eg 10w60.
all this info only applies if your still living in the heat of south africa

1/ the first number is the initial temp as which oil starts working
2/ the second number is the upper temp limit before oil starts loosing its protective viscous properties

query

Postby IrishPhoenix » Wed Oct 05, 2005 10:31 am

I'm not well up on the mechanics of cars, but I used Castol GTX Magnatex 10W40. I was getting confused when switching on the ignition the oil light was showing so I put a a couple of litres in. The dip stick doesn't have a max mark but i'm assuming its where it coils is the max? The old man was giving me grief saying that too much oil could ruin an engine and that the red oil light only comes on as the engine hasnt started and the oil is still cold? A plume of white smoke came out of my exhaust the other morning on starting the car initially? What causes this?
You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine'.

 yes it does! There's 2 notches near the end of the dip stick... lower one is min, upper one is max.

I was a bit concerned by this comment too. IP has the dipsticjk on your car perhaps been replaced by an incorrect replacement. If so you would want to replace it with a correct OEM spec one.

As Kev and Mustang both said - there should be a min and max mark on the dip stick. Might be an idea to meet someone else with an FTO and compare dipsticks - if you've a non standard/OEM dipstick you've no way of confirming that it will measure the oil level correctly.

The old man was giving me grief saying that too much oil could ruin an engine

Your dad's right - too much oil can cause problems for an engine.

and that the red oil light only comes on as the engine hasnt started and the oil is still cold?

I can't remember if the oil light comes on just after you click on the ignition (I'd imagine it does as this would be fairly standard for all cars) but AFAIK it shouldn't stay on at all once you've fired up the engine....

A plume of white smoke came out of my exhaust the other morning on starting the car initially? What causes this?

Not sure about this - could it be condensation? Does it happen all the time when you start the car first thing?
