Difficulty selecting reverse on Manual

Postby Kace » Thu Mar 20, 2008 2:14 pm

Over the past months I have sometimes had difficulty in selecting reverse on my manual GPX. Normally what I need to do to get it in there is either re-press the clutch or if that fails. move the car a few mm forward then try again.

It's not a major problem but just wondering could it be a gearbox oil change or something like that to fix ?

Anyone ?

The exact same thing was happening to me not long after I got the car.
I've since changed the gearbox oil (though not for that reason) and I haven't noticed it recently. But I can't say it's because of the oil change.

I have the very same problem.......Linkage problem perhaps? Maybe it's a common trait with GPX's?

Kace, get the 'box oil changed for a start, its not a big job. Its likely to be a selector problem, if other gears (i.e. 5th) exhibit similar problems then the synchromesh could be the culprit. Paul N is your man.

Yeah will get Paul to do that as it has never been changed. Problem is only with Reverse.

When was the last time you changed gearbox oil?
I changed it twice when I had this FTO and never had an issue with gears - suspect it hasn' t been changed since.

I didnt change it since i got the car. I must change it so. How often should it be done? What type of oil you recommend?

After you change the oil, i there is no improvement I would suggest you check the gear cable mounting bracket on top o the box. It is common for these to need replacing. If you do need to replace it make sure you replace the rubber/plastic washers also

I've always had this problem, have had my oil changed though. No improvement in that regard, just slightly smoother changes in forward gears. It's just something I live with, clutch in, clutch out!

I'll get a friend to check that cable mounting bracket i reckon thats what it could be. I'm going to get the oil changed now anyway.

Most of the time i can get it into reverse fairly quickly but got stuck in a multi-storey car park a few weeks ago for about 10 minutes. It was embarassing and annoying as it was in front of the car valet guys. They eventually asked if i needed a push

There's no synchromesh on 1st and reverse gear so it's not that. Is it hard to get into 5th gear or any other gear?

This doesn't happen in any other gear and all others work fine all the time. Only happens for me rarely and generally in winter or cold weather. The easy solution for me is to move the car slightly forward an inch or two unti reverse can be selected.

I usually have to double clutch to get reverse. I think the box could do with an oil change and perhaps that linkage bracket too.
Currently in my collection:
'98 Toyota Starlet...
'79 Mini Clubman 1380cc ~100BHP (I hope)
'79 BMW 728

Nah - it's a very minor annoyance in winter at the most. Double clutch also helps.
