number plate

got the rear end resprayed last week
and some other bits touched up.
while i was at it, i decided to go jazzy on the number plate
as the existing one was cracked and fixed with super glue.
had a world of trouble getting a new one to fit. ended up having to get the perspex cut myself.
but whille putting the new plate on ive noticed that the
bottom of it sits proud of the car by about 2 inchs.
the bracket for fitting it seem bent outwards.

is this normal?

im worried now that the car has been hit at some time and the bar bent.

Sounds to me like the perspex was cut ar$e ways.
There are two sizes of "square" number plates that I am aware of (there may be more), the "Jap" size which is more rectangular can't remember the dimensions... width should be ~320mm and the depth is around 220mm. This is the one you want. There is a more "square" plate don't know the dimensions probably around 280 x280mm this is not wide enough to cover the gap in the rear bumper and will look ridiculous. (I have one on my current FTO which need to be binned).
IIRC on the rear bumper there are what appears to be two sets of mounting points. The upper set with wider seperation are the ones you want, there are two holes nearer the middle of the where the plate should be these have a norrower seperation and are not really suitable for mounting the plate as I think they are recessed a bit too far (this is from memory so the details may be a bit off.
In any case is the plate is protruding down, it's either the wong size, mounted wrong or both.

the problem is not the size of the prespex
its the bar that the plat attaches to
when the plate is screwed at the top
the bottom doesnt sit flush
its driving me nuts

Mick, I had the same problem, I had 2 new holes drilled at the bottom of the plate and bumper, and screwed with plastic caps 3 and a half years ago on new plates, No problems since.
Well the problem was I had to get new plates on the advice of the NCT centre to comply with Irish plate requirements. This meant that the plate also needed to have Port Lairge on it but you cannot see the Port Lairge as it is up underneath the light and the plate is too narrow to fill the housing so there is a gap either side.
