New Alloys

Postby Mickthepieman » Fri May 16, 2008 1:53 pm

I am thinking of changing the original 16" alloys for 17" my be with 215 50/R17 tyres instead of the 205/50/R16 tyres.

Any comments :?:

The reason I am thinking of going for 50mm wall is that on my last car I had 45mm and had to replace three tyres because of pot holes :smt102 .

A 45 profile is more than sufficient on a set of 17's (dedendant on offset), bear in mind that a lot of people use a 40 profile. A 50mm sidewall may foul the arches and more worryingly, the suspension struts. My advise is to go with steelroes recommendations. I ran 215/45/17 tyres for a number of years without any issues.

The offset will depend on what rims you buy - they come in various offsets depending on the rim design and cars its designed for.

If you are looking for a highish profile tyre then you can discount the 18 and 19 inch rims straight away.

I'd recommend 215/17 45 profile with an offset of circa 30-34 (for looks and to prevent rubbing on strut and wheel liner). This would be a larger diameter tyre than recommended but its a good compromise between handling and comfort.

A 50 profile on a 17 inch rim would be too much IMO - you would be likely to run into issues.

Thanks for your help on this one, very helpful.
I will take your advice and go for 215/17 R45

I will post some pics when I get back from Wales, I hope to get the wheels then.

Would it be okay to get 215/45 R17 instead of 205/45 R17

215/40 would be ok, I have this size on mine - but 215/45 sidewall would be similar to 205/50

I have 235 x 40 tyres on a 17 x 8 rim and find them fine...
