Well, after been talking to the chap who was looking out for a good one to import for me but no luck. Any silver ones he found were automatic and any decent manuals were black or white. Well guess i have to keep looking, eventually though!

Well, am partial to the pre facelift models and anything from 1.8 - 2.0 Mivec is fine with me (after all they are all classed under the same insurance catagory). Other than that manual and silver (picky i know, but sure if im going to get one its silver or none :P ) . Cheers for the heads up though, bringing one over from England could be an option if i cant find one over here in the next while

All the more reason to rule out the 1.8 and non MIVEC models now.

I've posted about this car before, but I reckon it'd definately be worth a look.

I was looking at that one actually, one thing that puts me off it though is lack of airbags. 6'500 for 95 with 70,000 miles..seems good..il have a gander tho.

You only need airbags if you crash!
Anyway, on a 95 car there's no guarantee that the airbags are actually going to work.

No airbags = less weight. I would personally prefer a non airbag model. I think the marketing benefit has far outweighted the safety benefit at this stage. If you are that worried about crash safety then you probably should not be thinking of driving an FTO in the first place - it is a 14 year old design - hence 14 year old safety standards.

Touche!
Never thought about the less weight thing. Even tho the lack of airbag puts me off, it would not stop me from buying it would just make me take my time looking for another one. I spent a long time looking for the 97 mirage and lucky enough got a great deal on it. Im terrible at making decisions :P

Thanks for all the help and suggestions so far lads..im still going to look down the import route as there are some tasty looking ones out there at good prices

Well, as soon as i get my full licence (test shud be up shortly enough) quinn said they would do it for 1700 (3rd party). Currently paying 1800 on provisional on the mirage. I will have to have a gander an dsee what it would be like on a provisional, 22yr old. Alot of it will be based on the full licence test being passed.

Well, its been a while but i have my full test on march 7th and got my renewal quote on my mirage aswell. 1800 down to 1200, not too bad at all. Pending the outcome of the test i will source the car myself and a mate of mine will import it for me

you'd wanna get your skates on, you don't wanna be registering an FTO after July this year

Yip - 36% VRT and 2,000Euro road tax is gonna put a lot of people off importing an FTO.

it will affect you no matter who imports it if it's registered after July. I'd leave plenty of time incase ship is delayed/some f*ck up happens in Japan etc.. there will be a rush to import performance cars before the deadline, you don't wanna be waiting on the car in the last week of June.

I wouldn't be too sure of that kwalsh, the new rules will have to apply to everyone to be effective.

Factor in a minimum of 3 months for shipment after purchase. In some cases, it can take up to a month for the car to move off the dock (dependant on shipping schedule), bad weather can also delay things. You would want to be purchasing very soon to ensure you don't get stung....

Ah cheers lads. Guess i better get on the hunt for one. If i don't get the full license then finding an insurer will be an effort and a half.

i was in a very similar situation to you, 22 years young just got the full license. i bought the car in Ireland cause i didnt think the savings were that great on an older model. To be honest i paid almost 1000 more for mine than what i had cause the previous owner treated her well. Be careful with Quinn though, keep the quote reference number if they offered you that price.
And i recommend doing the insuring online. I have a 1.8 manual. all FTO's are imports but i was asked over the phone 'was the car imported?.' The quote over the phone was €1400.
I checked this phone quote against the online quote. It was €906 when i put the model in as a GS 2 door. If i changed the model to the vague term 'import 1.8' the insurance jumped €500. makes no sense from what i can figure out.
Follow that at all? Might want to see what the lads have to say about this though! :?: :!:
