Derestricting nightmare!!

Postby Ferglar » Wed Jul 07, 2004 6:47 pm

I've been in the process of getting "derestricting" my 94 GR Tip for 3 months

so far i've had a powerchip derestrictor fitted only to find it stopped the gearbox workin (slight problem!)

i've now found out that HKS won't do one for the tiptronic Fto's.

The problem is that my mph/kph conveter cant seem to be found! its not fixed to the back of the dials or in the other commonly used place (can't remember where that is!).

So anyone been through all this sh*t yet or am i just real unlucky???

I hope one of you genius ftoer's has an answer cos i'm running out of hair to pull out!!!!!!!!!!!

To be honest I don't know, but wouldn't a KMPH-MPH convertor be just a card that sits under your speed 'needle'?

As in nothing mechanical, just something that says when your needle is over here, you're doing X miles per hour?

No Kev, It's an electronic device that converts everything, including your trip counter etc., i understood that most of the converters de-restrict anyway, I know that the one on my GR does. But sorry Ferglar I don't know where it would be positioned.

You might be better posting this on jcars, not too many of us here have the cars derestricted afaik - primarily because there is only 1 or 2 stretches of motorway that could handle the 150mph tag.

Have just started driving my FTO and noticed the maximum speed indicated on the speedo is 180km/h. Thought this seemed like a big enough number until I realised it's only around 111mph. I ran out of derestricted autobahn  before I reached the 180km/h mark, is the top speed electronically limited to 180km/h?
Anyway here's a link that might help if you havn't seen it already.

Yes - it is electronically restricted and it cuts out even though you can tell there is loads more left in the engine. The speedo will go to what seems like about 185 or so before you hit the limiter - scary feeling too when you hit it. I just couldn't justify taking it off for the one time that I might test it on the Maynooth Bypass
