Diagnose dead FTO ..PLEASE HELP

Postby sheraz_uk » Fri Jul 27, 2007 9:06 pm

Hi all... I got my FTO back from the SVA centre a couple of days ago from liverpool and it was running fine, but I did notice after while that the SRS Warning light was on permanently, what is this?

Battery was believed to be dead and required a jump start and was at first connected incorrectly (negative with positive and positive to negative ).

Now the car fails to start, only the doors indicator on the dash seems to work fine along with the interior and exterior lights...but when I turn the key nothing lights up on the dash... could anyone please help me pinpoint the actual fault.

The Cobra 7928 alarm seems to be working fine (the LED seems to work as normal)...the in dash volt meter does not seem to show anything (dead)..but i do know for a fact that the battery is fine..

DId the car run AFTER the battery was connected wrongly? If not the mainfuse theory still applies..

The car was working ok the day BEFORE the battery had been connected incorrectly..but not since that mistake was made

I don't have anything to test the fuses but I did have good look and they seem to be ok (no indication of being burnt out)

the main fuse will be between the battery and the main fuse box, any cars I've ever replaced them on had huge main fuses. sometimes completely enclosed.

It sounds like your alarm is tapped into the battery before the fuse.

Main battery fuse

Postby sheraz_uk » Sat Jul 28, 2007 4:18 pm

Are the main fuses not the ones on the bottom right in the fuse box rated 100A & 60A ?

I've now checked the alternator relay and other coloured fuses located in the fuse box and they are reading okay on the multimeter...are their any others that i should check?..how do i check the other black ones that have 4 pins? are their any others located outside the fuse box?

the big black ones you refer to I think are the relays... can't be sure without actualy looking at them...

Have a look here..

Have a look at any fuse over 35amp you spot..

looks like A, 1 & 2 are your main areas of interest there.
How are you testing the fuses?

fuses 2 & 3 appear to be bolted with a cable running out of the fuse box..i tested these by simply connecting either terminal of the Ohmmeter to either side of the fuse (making contact with the bolts, without acutally taking the fuse out).

The alternator relay i tested by attaching the terminals of the Ohmmeter to two pins (not the one with the notch) and making sure that their is no continuity when the + and - are swaped over... i.e. from what i've read their should only be continuity flowing in one direct within the relay.
